Thanks to all following and supporting us.

As is obvious by my splits and finishing time, it was yet another disaster at Boston for me.  I ran within myself and tried really hard to be conservative in the beginning and felt pretty good about everything that I could control throughout the first half.  I felt much better than last year and was putting in a performance not far off of that effort (which was much harder).

But not having enough long distance running in the last two months kicked my azz (I did not run anything longer than 12 miles in that period) and the early heat took it's toll on me.  At mile 20 right before heartbreak the legs had just had enough and the cramping started.  So unlike last year I walked heartbreak at which point my boss passed me, but didn't see me.

It was a shuffle/cramp/stretch/walk through the rest of the race, just like last year.  It reaffirmed what I was already feeling ....... I really don't like running marathons!!  It took me 6 finishes to see that.  I've had 3 good ones and 3 identical result disasters.  The disasters leave a stronger taste in your mouth than the good results.

I really did not have fun this year during the race.  As of right now I'm not going to run another marathon, but we'll see how that goes in a few years.

gracetheterp - 2008-04-21 11:15 AM Chris in 1:08:57. I hope he's doing OK; I know he wanted to finish in under 3, and he's at 3:14:19 pace right now.

Thanks Grace, and everyone, for cheering us on! While I did go to Boston dreaming sub-3, I set out with a 3:10 pace band that morning. A bathroom stop, shoe-lace retie, some cramping, and a Boston fan holding what looked like a live, full sized penguin in his outstretched hand (please tell me someone else saw this) put the goal out of reach. It felt good, though, to keep the pace at even effort on the hills and to cruise into downtown with something left in the tank.

Well, this thread just cemented it for me. Paul (pshorty) and I talked at the Boston pre-race dinner about how well the BT site is organized and the tremendous variety of Tri-support this space offers -- yet how its really is all of the people who train and post that make it so wonderful. Reading through the posts was really inspiring. (Do you guys work at all?!) Thank you all for being so supportive and cheering us on from afar. Can't wait to do the same for you!

Right, next you will be telling us that they secretly put four hills on the course through Newton.

Great job everyone!

Congrats to all finishers - I was there following a bunch of friends at heart break hill and later at the finish line and it was lots of fun. You guys were very lucky with the weather this year, all my friends racing from the 2:40hr to the 4:35hr finishing times said the same thing; the weather was just perfect.

The weekend was pretty cool having the Females US Olympic trials the day before and watching Deana Castor lay down the hammer to win the race was awesome not to mention watching Desiree Ficker who had a solid race and wow she is cute! Yesterday was very cool watching Cheruiyot almost breaking his on course record and Tune winning the closest female finish ever in the race by 2 seconds; even watching Lance was cool. Overall nice weekend in bean town, I might have to signup for the race next year!

Yes, thank you so much for all the well wishes! Everytime I crossed a timing mat I though about this thread and it gave me a lot of extra motivation to not back off, so I share this with all of you!

OK, if getting a chance to run the Boston Marathon wasn't a crowning achievement in my young running career, finding this thread after the race only makes it all that much more special.

Truly and sincerely, thanks for taking an interest in me on this.  I did know a couple family members where watching my times, but didn't realize that I was part of the BT thread.  I'm honestly touched by this.  THANK YOU!

As for TriToy - I couldn't find you.  I stopped at the medical tent in mile 18 (on the left side near the top of the hill) and asked for you - they hadn't heard of you.  I did see some medical people running around on the right side of the road.  But Newton was really kicking my tail, so my searching efforts were very paultry.

As for ChiRunner, dude - WE WERE IN THE SAME CORRAL!!!  Small world to find this out now.    It was strange realizing we were one of the last runners to cross the start line of the 20K runners.  But imagine my delight when I passed a bunch of runners with blue bibs!

Seriously, you guys are top shelf!

Condorman I was not in the tent  - I was stationed between the two waterstations on the hill on mile 18 - I was the doc that kept bringing them people!

glad you made it through - and the newton hills were kicking lots of butt!

I was waiting near the corral entrance to find both you and chirunner.  I found him OK, but somehow couldn't locate you to take a picture, sorry about that!  I was frantically scanning race numbers but somehow you eluded me!

Were you able to watch Julia wearing the Myathlete GPS unit?
If so, what did you think?

condorman we might been in the same coral but once the gun went off I worked my way up to coral 23 maybe even 22. I was not sure if I was going to finish based on my previous marathon times on "easier" courses so I did everything I could to make sure I had all the time I needed to finish. Good news for me I had plenty of time to finish.

Funny I always thought if I ever ran boston I would slow down and take it easy (I assume it would be by some miracle BQ or atleast be faster) instead I went out and ran the race of my life. What a race and what a city. I am still in shock that I was able to get in and run the race.

Funny since most of my friends thought going to Boston was an April Fools joke since I told them on April 1st.
