I was just going to put this out there for suggestions. I am new to the sport, getting my training in/getting back in shape etc. I'm up in the Bay Area and am looking for a good Tri for my first one. My sister competed in her first Tri with Team in Training at the Pacific Grove Olympic distance. Of course it would be great to do an Olympic first (sister rivalry) but I am more than okay to do a sprint and work my way up. I don't have the luxury of a training group, so I'm trying to stick to what I can fit in that is similar to plans on here.

Any suggestions of what a good first tri would be, are all greatly appreciated! And of course I would take any and all suggestions for everything else!Laughing

A good first tri is the Tri 4 Fun series in Pleasanton. It is a simple sprint and signing up for all three is a good way to judge your improvement. In September they host a Tri 4 Real with distances between that of a sprint and Oly. Also see the J&A website the upcoming one at Uvas was my first, it is 2 weeks away. I signed up a week before the event because they still had spots, I was nervous but it was great.

Good Luck!

Welcome to BT!

I'm not sure where in the Bay area you are, but I did this one as my first tri:

http://mermaidtri.athleteslounge.com/events/event.php?eventid=2326

It's all women, lake swim, flat loop course for the bike, not much shade on the run from what I remember, but a great race!

go to www.trifind.com and you'll see tons of races listed.

Good luck and have fun.

Abbie

Not much tri wize north of Sacramento, but a fair number in the Sacramento area. You are oh 300 miles south of me so not so Far North in CA. Tri for fun, Tri for real etc, granite bay, and rancho seco or whatever it is south of sacramento. I probably wouldn't do the escape from alcatraz as a first tri ouche 8). Remember to check elevations, the Lake Taho series is at like 6000 feet or so and elevation makes quite a difference on performance.

There are lots of good triathlons in the area!

Personally, I like the Total Body Fitness races, but they're out near Lodi/Sac.  They have a Tri-4-Fun sprint series all summer long.

There's another Tri-4-Fun series out of Pleasanton.  I've never done those, but I know folks who have (cadreamer?

What time frame are you looking at?

The tri-for-fun in Pleasanton is good, and very low key. Another good sprint is the See Jane Tri in September. My daughter did it last year. It's an all woman race in Pleasanton in September as well.

Other than that, there are almost too many races to count in the area (definitly too many races to be able to afford.)

I did the Tri for Fun in Pleasanton last August as my first tri and highly recommend it-- mellow enough but still a race atmosphere, well run, lots of volunteers, and food afterwards.

I also started with the tri for fun series in pleasanton a couple years ago.  Was a great low key event geared towards tri newbies.

Wow, been a while since I had a chance to get on here...but tons of feedback! Thanks!

I have to say I was looking at the See Jane Tri in Pleasanton. And then saw the Tri for Fun series. Of course I am always worried about if I have trained enough to sign up and or actually perform it. I need to check the dates on some of these, to sign up if there is room and then really give myself that motivation.

Yes, having a race on your calendar can help provide motivation and structure to your training since you then have a goal.  Good luck and enjoy!

Alright so looking at things this is what I am thinking.

There is a 1.2 or 2.4 mile ows in Cupertino in July that I believe I am going to sign up for.

But for the first Tri being a Tri for Fun in August at Pleasanton. I know I can bike the 11 miles (need to get out and work on some hills), I'm not worried about swimming (and the ows should help me be more certain of that). Now the run, the only part I am concerned about. I don't mind walking part of it, but of course I want to run as much as I can (run=jog for me). Think it is possible to take about three months to be able to jog at least the 3 miles? I'm going to say yes...but I'd like realistic opinions too!

you can definately be ready to run a 5k after 3 months. When i first got off the couch last year i used a running program clled the C25K (couch to 5K) program from coolrunning.com I was able to run a 5K in 9 weeks. I know they were bought out by active and now everyone is over at kickrunners.com and they have a C25K plan also. I think it might even be the same one.

3 months is plenty of time to train to run 3 miles.  You'll just need to work your way up.  FYI, the run in Pleasanton is on fire trails so there are some small hills (but they will seem much bigger after a swim and a bike).

FYI: on the bike, there is really only one hill on the bike course, on the backside of the course, but you will likely have some wind to deal with.

I'm guessing the swim you are mentioning is the catfish open water swim.  FYI, those distances are the same as in a half IM or full IM.  At the tri for fun it's only 400m.  Obviously, if you can swim 1.2m, you can easily do 400m.

This was my first. Nice and mellow. They use it as a fundraiser and I think there war about 300 people last year. The big plus for me was the 2 mile run, perfect for my first. I have been hooked ever since.
