my last big training weekend for IMKY is the same weekend as my favorite 8 hour ultra marathon. That weekend I suppose to work out that many hours but 6 hours is suppose to be on the bike. Would it really hurt to do the 8 hour footrace?

Yes - It would really hurt your training especially if cycling is a limiter.

Um, I'm no coach, but I am going to go out on a limb and say:

YES.  There's a huge difference between a long bike/run brick and an 8 hour run.

I would stick to your plan, the ultra will take a much bigger toll on your body then the bike ride will.

I agree with the others, DO NOT go on an 8 hour run.  Get your booty on the bike.   Most people crater on the bike and are in trouble before they get to the run.   This year, my goal in my IM training is to ride up to 5 times per week and cut the number of runs down and the length of the runs down.

yeah that is what I thought. I am not worried about recovery. Heck I the last 6 weeks I ran 50k and 2 marathons and I am getting faster each race.

I might still go and party but I will not run the race. If I run I will only run like 16 miles. No point in doing the race unless you do over 26.2 miles.

FWIW, Dont do it. Your A race is the IM so dont put that in jeapordy by going to a "favorite race". no way i am going to jeopordize an IM finish for a race that i consider a favorite a week before the big event.

Dude, stay away from that big long 8-hour run -- unless your real name is Dean Karnazes. Stick to your IM build-up training session and be very happy with that so you'll be on track for your IM race.

Would it really hurt to do the 8 hour footrace?

Yes.  It would hurt you.

Stick to your training plan.  Do what it says.  Exactly.  Don't trade an hour or two of biking for running so you can do the relay with friends.  Stick to your training plan.  Don't sign up and plan to run a few hours and drop out.  Stick to your training plan.

Any possible idea that you can come up with for doing some portion of this race....NO!  Stick to your training plan.  Your favorite race will be there next year.  Your first IM is once and only once.

x2

Your taper prob won't be enough to recover you from 8 hrs of running...you'll surely pay the price at the IM.

It sounds like the other folks who have posted to this thread, are recommending that you do not run at all, unless I am misinterpreting.

Exactly what he said. Of course he's practically a pro at this... so I think taking his advice is very wise.

Chi... We only have roughly 3.5 months of IM training. If you throw in a 2 week taper... you are down to 3 months of training. 3 MONTHS!

Ok, so looking at 3 months... you have only 12 times to get the distance on the bike down. You only have 12 times to try to ride 80-100+ miles and to come off the bike FRESH.

12 times is not that many. Every Sat or Sun you take away from your training plan with races and stuff that will NOT contribute to your IM will just add time onto your race. It might mean the difference between making the bike cut off and not making it.

Sure you have done marathons and lots of running this year... but unless you can come out of the water not totally fatigued... and off the bike fresh... it won't mean a thing. You can't run or even walk a decent marathon if you are compely wiped out from the other two events.

3.5 months left. Not that long. FOCUS on the GOAL.

Only 12 long ride left? Dang. Man the IM is almost here. I can come out of the swim pretty fresh. My swim is strong and I am getting faster. I swim about 4 days a week and cutting it down to 3 soon. I do 1 long swim between 2 - 3 miles a week. I will run after the swim alot of the times.

You are all right about the bike being my limiter. I might come off the bike completely exhasted. Many people's attitude well I do not have to worry about the run since I can just walk it is a bad attitude to have. I think my running though not fast is strong enough to get me through it if I can get off the bike. Last 6 weeks I done 3 long runs of 26.2 miles or more. You are right though I have to be able to get off that bike. Honestly not sure if 12 weeks will be enough time to get used to the tri bike. I might just switch back to the roadie but for now I am doing all my training on the tri bike.

I just hope the race sells out soon. I want it to be a case of I can not get into the race even if I wanted to.
