I am sorry if this question has been asked and answered before. I am new to tris but have been biking for years, and have an eye toward IM distances for next year. will anybody please share your experiences with me in terms of how many hours a day/week i should expect to train to participate in IM events? i don't expect to have competetive times, but i am sure i am beyond 'just trying to finish'

have fun,
pat,

There is one in Training Plans for Multisport Athletes by Gale Bernhardt that has a 13 week, 13 hour plan to finish an IM in 12-14 hours. Based on what I have seen, that would pretty much be the lowest number of weekly hours you will find for an IM plan.

It's also available here:

You can count on spending at least an hour a day in a workout, and that doesn't count time for setup/travel to the gym/recovery.  On the long run/ride days, of course it gets to be a lot more.  Your average week is going to be between 9 and 13 hours and your highest volume week is going to be between 14 and 25 hours.

Patrick,

Good to see another 'NJ-ite' on the board. This question is often asked and my response is typically, 'How long does it take to do an Ironman?' Some would answer 8hrs some would answer 17hrs and everywhere in between and training time is no different. The amount of time needed for train for an IM comes down to your own ability, goals and how many available hours you have in the day. There are very successful IM athletes who race on 12hrs /week and there are some that need 30hrs. I'd say that most amateurs avg somewhere in the vicinity of 10-13hrs /week, while most pros are well over the 20hr mark.

There are exceptions to every rule, but if you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to drop me an e-mail. Hope to see you at the local races this Summer!

thanks for you replies. those estimates will help me figure out my 'lifestyle' schedule relative to me training schedule ... managing expectations so to speak.
