Subject: To Race or Not? Hawaii 70.3

(back story)A week ago today one my dogs, Calvin (my avatar), got severely ill.  He went into the hospital on Friday and just got out yesterday.  We almost lost him, but he is on his road to recovery with meds and rest and hopefully he will not relapse.  Check out my training log for the full story.  (Our dogs are our kids, so please no comments about "oh, it's just a dog!"

Two weeks from today Matt (hubby) & I should be leaving for Hawaii so I can race Hawaii 70.3.  Matt told me to go to Hawaii and he will stay home with the dogs since there is no one that can take care of Calvin right now that we would feel comfortable leaving him with.  If this had happened a month ago, we would be fine having the petsitter come as usual, but right now we are so grateful that he is home and getting healthy, we don't want to risk it.  He said, "you've trained so much for this race, go do it.  We'll be fine here, it's not a big deal"  We have insurance on the trip so we can cancel and get most of our money back and a credit on the flight.  I would feel so bad going away to Hawaii without my hubby.  Do I really want to be alone in Hawaii???  Hawaii is "our place" it was our first vacation together, we were married there 2.5 years ago, we were there to celebrate our first anniversary.  It's wonderful that he's so supportive which makes this decision for me ever more difficult.  Ugg, what would you guys do???????  Please weigh in, I'm torn!!!!!

Abbie

I would go race!

I know it might be hard going it alone, but you never know if you get that chance again! So I would race, then take a seperate trip with hubby!

Go race. Hopefully there will be plenty of excitement to keep your mind off home. Leave your cell phone in transition and call when you finish.

I won't do the whole, "It's just a pet," bit, but your travel insurance provider probably will.

Hope Calvin keeps getting better and you have a great race!

How do you feel about competing in a race while you are alone and thinking of loved ones thousands of miles away?

It is important that you are mentally able to race.

Coming to Hawaii on your own can be special if you take the time to enjoy your surroundings, but in the end it has to be what you want to do.

Well... what about having the vet's office board him while you are gone? That way you know he is in safe hands and your hubby can go?

sounds like your husband is very supportive of you, very lucky you are indeed... If you are mentally prepared to go, I say do it, and consider yourself lucky. If not, and the guilt of leaving your SO is too much, then scrap it for next year assuming that this isn't a once in a lifetime race for you. There is always next year in most cases.

KSH - 2008-05-15 11:03 AM Well... what about having the vet's office board him while you are gone? That way you know he is in safe hands and your hubby can go?

We considered this, but Calvin does not board well.  He lost 5-6 pounds while at the hospital over the 5.5 days he was there.  Right now he is skin and bones (you can see his hips bones and spine protruding)so we need to get weight on him to help him recover and get stronger.

I wouldn't go. It won't be much fun without your hubby. Or maybe you are very outgoing and can have fun wherever you are, even if you don't know anyone. I am not like that.
It's just a race. I never feel any obligation to do a race just because I paid for it. If I don't want to do it, I don't do it.
I bet you have a gut feeling about what you want to do. Just go with that.

I try to use the idea if it is easy and works out I should do it. If lots of obstacles come up it is a sign I shouldn't do it.

Two thoughts...do know others that will be there that would supportive and fun to hang out with?  If you choose not to do it is there another HIM that you could do more local that fits into the same time frame so your training works for it?

I think the gut check is a great one. I can tell you are conflicted. I hope the answer is clear to you and you have peace with it.

May Calvin continue to improve and put some weight on!

Calvin will be angry if you don't go. He told me so.

You've spent all this training time, you can send happy thoughts while biking/running. Ultimately how much of your hubby would you see during the race anyway? Also, it will depend on if you can get any refund on the tickets/race/hotels - if everything is paid for and no refunds then I'd definately go. If he was on his deathbed then maybe not but he's getting better, what could you really do anyway?

I wouldn't go. I would be worried sick the entire time about my dog and wouldn't enjoy the race. I'd feel horrible if I got "the call" about my dog and was several hours of flying away. You just got out of the woods with him, so I'd spend some time taking care of him and making sure he doesn't relapse.

I know how you feel. Our dogs are our "kids" too, and we just went through a harrowing medical experience with one being diagnosed with bone cancer and having to have a leg amputated. She's ok now, but we spent lots of time with doctors and her at the hospital. I was just so glad to get her home and back to being happy again. I delayed starting my IM training by 3 weeks because of it. I was a mess during that time.

Wishing Calvin a speedy recovery!

I'd stay home with my [wife] and doggie. They're more important to me than a race, ESPECIALLY if I can get most of my money back. Hawaii will be there, the race will be there, but the dog is only gonna be here for so long.

Since your dog is on the road to recovery, I would go for it.  And give yourself permission to enjoy the race and the trip.

And if any of this has to do with being apprehensive about traveling to Hawaii alone, this is a good exercise.  A healthy adult should be able to travel and enjoy themselves  alone.

And if this has to do with guilt for leaving your husband - you staying home too doesn't erase that.  Then he might feel guilty for you missing the race.  It's a tangled web

Traveling alone is no problem, I do that all the time for business.

Yes, this is a tangled web!!!

I still have a few more days to decide....TriBike transport has to have my bike on Wednesday.

giggle.

But seriously, what made the trip appealing to plan?  Hawaii?  Hubby?  race?  Yes, a combination, but what part were you looking forward to the most?  Is that part missing if Hubby stays home?  or is that part missing if you stay home?

Go for a looong run, come home for some Calvin licks, and find the answer
