Subject: Calf Cramps When Swimming after a Run

I'm hoping that someone out there can shead some light on this problem for me...

I've been a competitive swimmer most my life but if I run before I swim (even the day before), my calves cramp while I'm swimming.  I've tried consuming more potassium, eletrolytes, stretching, re-streching and nothing seems to help.  I can swim and then run but not run and then swim.  Does this happen to everyone?  Does anyone know how to alleviate this problem?  Thanks!!

If it's immediately after the run, it's the temperature difference. Cramping in the swim is a common problem for people who use it as the 2nd half of a brick. I've found that taking in salt pills before the run helps with this somewhat, but it's really just delaying the inevitable for me. That's why I try not to make the swim the second half of a brick workout if possible.

If you are losing enough electrolytes while running and then trying to swim that might be your problem.  Do you fuel while running with something other than water? Throw a Nuun tablet in the water or even some gatorade.

I was having the same! I had taken endurolytes before running, after, and had sipped gatorade during my swim and still had cramps. Sometimes I would get toe cramps if it really got bad. It seems that I taxed my calf muscles way too much during my run and blew them out when I did hard kicking.

One thing I have started doing is exhausting my calves before my swim, it seems to relax them so I dont flex them so hard during kicking. Ill do calf stretching until they feel relaxed and then I will throw in some calf raises at the edge of the pool and then go back for more stretching. I think it has more to do with tightness of the muscle relative to the position that it flexes at that may be causing the cramps.

most likely you just need to get used to (get fitter) however why do you swim right after running? what's the purpose?

No.

Stop running before you swim.  You're a triathlete, you are supposed to swim FIRST!  (I can only promise you 7:45 if you swim first and run after )

^^^not right after, sometimes the same day though.  for instance, sometimes i run at lunch and then swim with a master's team at night.  or i will run the day before and swim the next day, still get cramps.

even as my fittest state (when i competed in college) i would get cramps in the pool after running during dryland training.  i was just hoping that someone knew why and how to fix it.

There is no known reason for muscles cramps; many suggest electrolyte ingesting might help, others suggest better hydration, other hydration + electrolytes and yet other suggest it is caused due to a lack of adaptation. No one knows but the point is that you should try different options until you can get it fix. I used to get cramping when swimming a few years ago and at first I thought I fixed it with sports drinks (hydration + electrolytes) but on long or hard sessions I would still cramp. I tried warming up before jumping on the pool and that also help a bit, I also made sure to be properly fueled before sessions but some times one thing migth work and some others it didn't

Nowadays I don’t have any issues unless I am swimming 5k+ yds and to be honest I have no idea what fixed it. Today I don’t take any electrolytes before, I now just bring plain water to my swim and I while I still warm up and barely do so on my legs before the swim, although I do make sure to fuel before and after any session (s,b or r). It just seems as I grew fitter and got to swim more over the years my body adapted, in particular since my avg session used to be 1-1.5K 3-4x a week and now is around 2.5-3K 5-6x a week.

If you run at lunch and swim at night you might want to pay attention to your post lunch recovery fueling (food) you are properly fueled for your evening session(s)

Wow.. You gave me the exact opposite advice.

Seriously, I used to have the same problem when I ran cross country in high school. I would immediately go to swim practice afterwards and I remember some cramping in the calves after hard push-offs the walls.

My guess it has more to do with fatigue and a schedule switch will help alleviate the swim cramps in this case. Especially if you never get them at other times. I never got them at other times either.

Different strokes for different folks.   And to clarify, I told you "not to do hard swim workouts immediately before your scheduled runs," especially when the focus should be on the run.  Nerd.

Sorry for the hyjack (Canadian spelling) Ally.
