OK I know this much. A bike has two wheels.......

Really, is there a triathlon dedicated-type bike out there or is it simply a road bike plus whatever rules the specific race my have for equipment (handelbars, etc.)?

I have a Raleigh tecnum (sp), that's about 10 years old. Nice bike, light and still works well. If one day, I get into enough shape to enter a race, will my bike do?

Thanks,

If your bike works for you, great, don't sweat it.  I rode a mountain bike in my first bunch of race and it worked for me.

But to answer your question, the biggest difference in the seat tube angle.  A road bike's seat tube is at a 71-73 degree angle, while a tri bike has 76-80 degree angle.  I don't know all the techinical stuff, but I have heard that using a tri bike makes it easier to get off and run because of the positioning and use of your leg muscles at that angle during the ride.  Pretty cool.

What Alanna said ... and that's no baloney!!!  You should be okay with the bike you have now.  You only need to look at something a bit more suitable when you decide to become more competitive.  Bicycles are like any other tool; there is a specific bike for a specific job.  The following article will give you a good idea of the difference between a road bike and a tri bike.

Cool beans. Nice to know about the little things (angle of seat), that make a difference.

Thanks
