I have a really sharp pain in the ball of my foot when I run.  I don't feel it at any other time, only when running.

Any ideas?

If I go past the time to switch running shoes, I start getting sore spots (bruises) on the bottom of my feet. A new pair of shoes feel so good.

How are your shoes? Is it time for a switch?

Unfortunately no, unless the shoes I have suck that bad.  They're about a month old and have about 100 miles on them.

Is it possible that you stepped wrong or on a rock and bruised your foot anyways? Bone bruises do take a long time to heal.

I can't think what else it would be. I would ice and run on a soft surface for awhile if you can.

If you aquajog for awhile to give it time to heel you probably won't lose much conditioning.

Good Luck,

Maybe a bone injury like a break that's only stressed when you run? Or, a tendon injury that only gets stretched far enough to hurt when you run? If a few days of R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) doesn't fix it, maybe have a doctor check.

Could be a stress fracture in the metatarsals.  These are hard to pick up on an x ray when the injury is fresh.  When it heals, the xray shows a callous of new bone on the injury and the doctor can tell you that you had  a stress fracture.

Could also be plantar fascitis.

It doesn't make too much difference because the treatment is the same.  Rest, ice, compression, and elevation.
