Bennet, CO, Colorado

Racing Underground

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 08m 43s
Overall Rank = 10/314
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 2/26
Pre-race routine:

Drove to the plains town of Bennett, CO and had my new favorite junky carb, Cinnamon Pop-tarts and 7-11 coffee. Stopped at the local King Soopers grocery store to use the bathroom and avoid the porta-potty's at the race.

Ran into the crew: Dills, Dave, Meg, and Fleigelman. Set up my transition spot.
Event warmup:

Rode with Mark and Fliegelman... found out that the out and back race course was going to be fast out and a motherf*cker coming back because of a fierce and sustained headwind!
Run
  • 13m 36s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 05m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Oh man! I knew this was going to be fast... the starting line was packed with fast guys! I went out hard immediately but could not shake the front group of about 7 or 8 runners. I had the lead for the first 3 or 400 meters and then this guy, Bucky, passed me... I could here Fleigelman's breathing right behind me (heavy breather). I re passed Bucky a few times and on every corner I could see Scott Fleigelman, Robert Gilbert and Dean Maruna right there. I also, knew that Dillard was probably right behind me too!

On the second lap, I looked at my watch and I was still holding a sub 5:30 pace and I was like, wow! I couldn't hear Fleigelman's breathing so I knew I could reach transition first. I was just hoping that the other runners were going too hard and would suffer on the course. It turned out to be true for Bucky, Maruna and Gilbert, but Fleigelman is strong and Dillard is too so they ran well within themselves. I wasn't sure if I went out too hard.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I wanted to go as hard as I could and I think I did.
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Well I lost the race in the transitions today. Second place and first place masters was separated by 7 seconds. I was 8 seconds slow here!
What would you do differently?:

I don't know
Bike
  • 38m 58s
  • 15.5 miles
  • 23.87 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike was good, but I had some problems in addition to the wind. I put new lower and more aggressive aero bars on my bike and my position is not quite right... I kept sliding forward to far on the saddle. I normally ride on the nose when TTing, but this was like I was falling off the nose! I reached the turn-around in first, but went into it too hard and skidded past it... Fleigelman and Dillard caught and passed me.

I caught back up and we were basically battling back and forth and then Fleigelman surged on an uphill with such force that Dills and I could only shrug... He ended up gapping us by a couple of hundred meters.

At this point it was me vs dills and I've been dropped by him in a similar situation before. I could feel him trying to drop me but I worked as hard as I could into the wind. I closed the gap on Fleigelman and got to transition slightly ahead of Dillard.
What would you do differently?:

Better bike fit. I think I rode as hard as I could today.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

I lost another 11 seconds to Fleigelman here. Dillard passed me in transition too! I need to get organized!
What would you do differently?:

Run
  • 14m 51s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 05m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran well. I passed Dillard early in the first lap and I could see Fleigelman. I closed in on his lead and thought I would catch him. Unfortunately he had enough juice to hold me off for a 7 second win.
What would you do differently?:

I could have dug deeper here.
Post race
Warm down:

jogged with Scott, Mark and Dave

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Transitions, bike fit to be picky... but I laid it all out. I think I raced as hard as I could today.

Event comments:

I really like the Racing Underground races. Strong competition and fun. I wish they had a beer tent though!

Another AG Podium and overall top 10!

Great race!  Your transitions were fast!  You beat me on the first one and I only had you by 1 second on the second one.  You were very strong and kicked ! Great effort on the second run!

Good Lord. How fast were you in your 20s?

I hate to think about my 20s... I didn't race or train back then... I was in to "other things"
