A funny thing happened Sunday while on my long bike training ride for IMKY.

The day started out great.  Hot, humid and windy (20-30mph).  The first 10 miles were great, turned south toward the hills we were going to train on and after a few miles into the wind, my speed went from 19-20 to 12-14?  I told my fellow rider that he could go ahead and ride and I would catch up with him on the hills?  Well 10 miles later my legs felt like they were going to fall off.  My mind was trying to rationalize what was wrong, was it the heat? Was it nutrition? Was it because I did my long run on Saturday?  Well at about that time I had a tandem pass me and ask if I was ok?  I must have really been going slow. That was the breaking point, I have never had a tandem pass me except on a downhill.

Well I pull over to rest a minute and reevaluate my self, look down and find that my wheel has been rubbing against my brake for the last 10-15 miles. It was not just rubbing a little, but a lot.

Needles to say I was happy and mad at the same time.  I was not going to die of heat stroke, my nutrition plan was still intact, and I was going to go re-pass that tandem.

Well to make the long story short I had to call for my wife to come pick me up, something was definitely wrong with the front hub.

WOW! At least you figured it out. You must have been working mighty hard out there.

Let's see... I have two things that stand out in my mind as firsts...

1) The wind blew me off my bike. Yep, a crosswind gust came. Blew the two people in front of me into a curb. It was a HUGE curb and I wasn't going there. So I threw on my brakes and BAM! got blown over on my right side. DUH! Yea, putting my foot down might of helped. It did hurt though.

2) Last week I got thrown off a group ride because I passed the ride leader up a hill. He got all upset and started yelling at me, "GO ON THEN! JUST GO!"... etc. I said I was sorry, but he continued to yell. So I just took off and did my own ride. Shoot, I was only doing 15 mph up a hill I can do 18-19 mph up! I was holding back and much as I could.

On most Saturday mornings I have to be available on the phone for work.  About a month ago I was out on a ride and I got a call so I pulled off to the side and unclipped the right foot and left the left foot clipped in.  It was windy and a gust caught me off balance and over I went on my left and the phone skidded across the road.  I get up, dust myself off cussing a bit.  I walk across the road and retrieve my cell phone and the guy on the other end is still talking! Never missed a beat or realized anything happened!

I was having lunch with some elementary teachers during a professional development session I was running and they were all remarking on my healthy but substantial lunch, followed by the requisite comments of eating what ever I want and you must workout alot and you're so lucky...

Anyway, I explained that I am training for an Ironman, but before I could say triathlon or anything else, one teacher said to me "Wow, you don't look anything like those enormous weight lifting ladies I see on ESPN!!!"

I did explain...

Last Sunday when my mom was at church she was explaining that we were going to ID for the race and what all it was to her friends.

One of them looked dead at my mom and said "Oh Ann, I do hope she wins."

LOL!!!

Suzanne your story reminds me of my story

Last year my mom made plans with friends for race night for me to hang out with them after the race. I was like "hello!!!!! It's gonna be pretty late when I finish like 11 or 12am" and she couldn't believe it. She figured since I was in pretty good shape I should finish somewhere in the middle of the pack around 8pm.

I was pleased she thought I was so fast but thought that was a riot as a 13 hour Ironman seemed laughable to me.

Last year I was going on a century ride with my IM training buddies. I had my aero bottle on my bike and had a full load of water on. After about 10 miles I took a sip and thought my water tasted funny. I look down and I have about 6 inches of FOAM coming out of top of my aero bottle. Turns out my wifey didn't rinse my my loofa quite well enough when she washed it. All the bouncing gave me a bit of a soapy bath. We still have a good laugh about that one.

Pouring rain, side of the highway, middle of a long ride. Was trying to teach myself to pee while biking. Stood over my bike, with my back to traffic, saying out-loud, "C'mon...you can do it....just let go....there's no one around..." The pep talk continued for probably a minute or two, and just as I finally was able to "let go", I looked over my shoulder, and there was a truck pulled over, right next to me, with the window down, with 2 very cute tri-boys, trying to get my attention to see if I was stranded. Yup.

Two things come to mind...

1.  On an epic ride on my trainer during a late spring snow storm, I crashed - Yes I crashed on my trainer...

2.  A few weeks later, doing a long ride get about 10 miles from home and flat.  Then go 2 more miles and flat, then 5 miles later, I flat again - out of tubes I call my wife to come get me.

I was up on the north end of IMCDA bike course. It is raining SIDEWAYS. I mean blowing 20+ MPH and raining cats and dogs.

I stopped at a top sign and was haing one of those "what in the heck am I doing" moments. Thinking this is what this has come to?

As I am sitting there a truck pull up beside me. He rolls down his window and vary calmy, slowly and deliberatley asks "dude..... you want a ride somewhere?".

After a very brief moment of consideration I said no. Said "believe it or not I chose to be out here. Gotta take the good with the bad".

This is from my log back in April.....I was battling horrible saddle sore issues.

"More sores, WTF!!! Amazing, but I found a dermatologist that will see me tomorrow! When i called the receptionist said the DR is taking new patients, but no appointments until June!! Yikes! I said, "i'm desparate, is there anyone you can reccommend?" Then everything just came out...I said, "I'm training for this really long triathlon, I need to be on my bike training and these saddle sores are killing me!" She said, "hold on, let me see what I can do" She squeezed me in tomorrow!! Yippee! She said, "my daughter-in-law was in the Xgames, I know how crazy you athletic females are about your sports. The DR is going to kill me for putting you on the schedule." I could have kissed this woman through the phone. I asked her if she is a wine drinker and she told me "no, but the DR is." She said, bring in the wine and I'll give it to the DR to make nice with her, too funny! Hmmm, there are some nice people left in this world!"

I went the next day for my apppointment and brought the wine.  It was the hit of the office!
