Subject: Random bar tape question

So I just put on some clip-on aero bars on my (road)bike to try them out. I am planning to race this weekend with them on to feel them out and I was wondering if I should go ahead and put on some bar type so i'm not just grabbing the metal. I am worried it may get slippery when i sweat. I could put on gloves on transition, but they seem to take at least 15 seconds to get them on. Do people without bar-end shifter normally put tape on their clip-on bars? Thanks

i haven't had any problems with slipping, except when i am wearing a long sleeve jersey -- the sleeves of my jersey slip on the aero pads. i thought about putting on bar tape, so my hands would grip, but i think i just had to built a little bit of tricep muscle to stabalize my arms, thus they won't slip. i haven't had problems with my hands being sweaty/wet during a race, i usually have bigger concerns

I would go tapeless.  I've been using aerobars since the early 90's, and never taped them.  Your arms are more or less held in position at the elbows, so slippage has not been a problem in my experience.

I like the tape for looks, but it's not critical - or at least not as much as the bars where you put your weight on them and could slip off.  With aero, you weight is on the pads, not the hands....

Thanks for replies, I guess i will hold off on taping them, unless i find some cheap tape that would look cool. I will probably be posting some bike Fit pictures soon to get comments/reccomendations on my set-up/position.

Personal experience- I get better grip on metal with bare hands, as gloves tend to slip. With gloved hands, I do better with tape. Try it both ways before the race (preferably with cheap tape, in case you decide to scrap it.)
