Subject: Commuting to work, with which bike?
So I started commuting to work on my bike, I live 2.5 miles from work. But even though I work in an office complex Im worried about riding my road bike to work (less then 1 year old). So instead I ride a crummy sears mtn bike iv owned for 14 years. (its slow and ya gotta work hard to go , I HATE IT).

How many of you ride your road or tri bikes to work? Do you lock it?

I work and park my bike in a major metro downtown area, where it sits alone for 9 hours unattended.  So I ride an old 10-speed (my commute is 9 miles) and use a ridiculous U-lock that might have cost more than the bike.

For 2.5 miles does it really matter?

Anyway, I use my 30 yo road bike for commuting to the train station, not my fancy looking tri-bike. In reality, they are both quality bikes, but the 30 yo road bike looks like it's been ridden for 30 years, so is a lot less attractive to... um... bike collectors.

I ride my road bike to work (about 12-miles).  The building has indoor bike storage so I feel it's safe...but I still lock the bike to a pole in the locked storage room.  Sometimes I bring my bike to my office...but I've been talked to about this.  Bldg Mgt doesn't like when I do that!

I do have an old mtn bike that I have riden in before. But like you said, it's a lot of work it adds some time to the commute.

I take my road bike (only bike!) to work.  We have patrolled secured underground parking.  I still lock it and won't leave it overnight.

I ride my road-bike-with-aerobars (no tri bike yet) and store it in one of the individual bike cabinets/sheds out front, secured with a padlock. A year or so ago when I was still working on-campus we only had bike racks, so I'd bring my bike up to my office.

I cycle commute year-round (there were two weeks out of the last year that I wasn't outside at least once on the bike) and use my MTB the majority of the time.  It is a 1992 Nishiki that has probably seen its last winter (I hate salt!).  Next winter I'll probably be using the old (1974) single speed road bike I just built up and moving the rack and panniers over.

Once the roads are clear, I'll switch to my road bike on occasion but still prefer the MTB (with panniers) for the bulk of my commuting miles.  I would never ride my tribike to work, I can't even imagine what trying to ride comfortably with a backpack would be like on that.

I ride my road bike to both the gym and work. At the gym, I lock it up in the bike rack right near the front door...so far, so good. At work, I bring the bike up the elevator into my office. I work on a college campus in a high-crime area, so even though bike racks are provided...I won't take any chances leaving it out in the racks.

I've had three bikes stolen (all locked).  And although I no longer live in the bicycle-theft capital of the world (Cambridge, England), I still ride a pretty inexpensive Kona commuter bike -- good enough to make the hilly miles to and from work not unbearable, but not as nice as the bikes it is typically parked next to.  I wouldn't dream of riding my road bike in (she's still a baby! only 4-weeks old).

I ride my road bike to work 1-2 times a week, and bring it in my office. I wouldn't dare leave it at the outdoor rack.

That way, I can work and look at it wishing I was our riding

I ride my Felt S32 to/from work 2-3 times a week (25 miles).  Lock it in a bike room in our office building.

I ride a couple of bikes for commuting.

I ride my old (and yes I mean old -1937) cruiser to commute usually. I ride about 4km to the seabus (water taxi) and then about 500m from there to work. I have no problem locking this bike anywhere and lock it in the bike cage in our parking garage at work. I also ride it to the store or elsewhere and lock it up wherever, bike racks, telephone poles etc.

When I ride one of my road bikes to work (about 12km) it is usually because I am going to do a workout before or after work. When I bring a road bike it, I put in an empty office cubicle.

I was riding my one-and-only bike (a cheap K2 road bike) to work and in races, but recently bought a second roadie just for training rides and racing. So the K2 is now the commute-only bike. I do lock it at work (with a cheap lock) in a spot outside our office that is pretty well protected...it could be stolen, but someone would have to be pretty bold to do it.

When I sub at my neighborhood middle school or high school (1.5 miles away), I ride my 1992 Bianchi Boardwalk hybrid. I sling a messenger bag over my shoulder, and I just feel better-balanced with the straight bars. Although many students don't bother to lock up their bikes at the racks, I use a u-lock. It's a good old workhorse of a bike, but it's one of my favorite possessions.

My hubby has a 6-mile (one-way) commute, and he rides his good Cannondale road bike. He keeps it in the warehouse area of his store.
