No I am not a narcisstic  pig.  The question of me being hot pertains to a recent attempt at an ice bath.

So I started running cold water in the tub, with two bags of ice sitting on the bathroom floor.  I jumped in the water as the tub was filling up and then dumped the ice in.  Was really cold for a few minutes, but then all of my ice just melted.

Should I have waited to get in until the tub was full and ice was dumped in.....did my "HOT" body simply warm up the cold water as it filled the tub, thus melting the ice once I dumped it in?

What is the correct procedure for an ice bath.

I like to sit in the tub and turn on cold water and fill it up over my legs then dump the ice in. The Ice will melt pretty quickly but the water will still be cold enough to do its job.

Heh, my wife calls me her "personal heating blanket" because I always run a little warm.  It will be interesting to see what I do to a tub of ice water after a workout when I finally get up the courage to try it.  Smile

No, you did it right. My guess is, being the middle of the summer, the cold water isnt as cold as it can be during the cooler months. The water out of your faucet is probably around 65 degrees or so. The ice simply melts because your body, and the water in the tub is above 32 degrees.

THe goal should be to get an ice bath temp around 50 degrees... it doesnt need to be 33 degrees or anything like that.

Next time, simply try 3 bags of ice if 2 doesnt get the water cold enough.

To save money on bags of ice (yes, I am that cheap!) I have old gallon milk jugs in the freezer filled with water. I throw 4 of them in the tub with cold water. They haven't yet fully melted so they work great! After the bath it's back in the freezer to refreeze for the next bath.

Trust me, you're not the one melting all that ice. It's the water. Water has a high specific heat which means that even cool water has alot of heat energy stored within it. So if you have mostly water the ice will melt very quickly. It's like trying to chill a tall class of water with two ice cubes -- the ice will melt right away.

You only need enough water to cover your legs and the water level will rise when you are in the tub, so fill the tub only one quarter of the way full at the most. That way you'll have a better ice/water ratio. You're only supposed to be in the ice bath for a few minutes, so there should be a few bits of ice left when you get out.

My wife calls me "an oven"... It's funny how my extra "heat" was welcomed during the winter, and now that it's summer I seem to find myself pushed to the end of the bed.

You got that right.  I've learned to stay out of kicking distance in the summer.

I'm cheap too and when you're in heavy training, you can go through tons of ice. Plus it's not as easy for me to buy in NYC. I make tons of ice and fill up big ziploc bags and a tub in the freezer and just keep it all filled up throughout the training season. I rarely have to buy the ice this way, except for after a 20-mile run, in which case I need several bags to do the trick!

I think it's for muscle inflammation and to get the waste moving out of the muscles.  Some people do ice bath for 10 minutes or so, then hot tub and back to ice bath.  Personally, I'm too wimpy for ice baths.  I've also heard of laying on the floor with your feet up on a wall to get the junk out of your legs.
