bryancd - 2008-06-24 7:11 PM My problem with "The Paste" is that it's just a euphanism for stupidity on race day. Just stick to the plan, people! Maybe it's easier when you have severe OCD....
LMAO, that's gold Jerry! I agree with your sentiment and wtf is "the paste"?!?! I know where it comes from, it just never made much sense to me

Who the hell is Jerry?!

Go 20-30 mins slower on the bike and you might save 1+ hours on the run.

But if you follow all of your plans like you did in training there should be no need to go slower on the bike.

You could be right. In my experience though, it doesn't seem to be that simple.

So would any of you experienced folks agree with the idea that "nailing your nutrition" goes hand in hand with "not going too hard on the bike"?
A lot of race reports I read where nutrition/GI issues crop up, seem to be code for "I was going too hard on the bike to keep down what I needed, then I paid the price on the run both from too hard an effort and too little nutrition/hydration".
It seems if you're trying to be faster overall you need the effort on the bike to be low enough to eat, drink, and in a manner of speaking, still be merry.
And I guess to have the effort on the bike low enough to eat, but still be fast enough to make the cutoff or other time goals, is where the consistency of training comes in. So is it common knowledge that Bike Training is the biggest component, and I'm just getting it? Or do most folks spend equal time in bike and run?

I've heard a lot of people say that IM is won on the run and I guess this comes from seeing the strong runners come from behind to win the event.

However I really like the thinking that IM is won on the bike. You have to execute the bike perfectly so you can execute the run as planned. If you do the bike right the rest will follow.

Nice way of thinking about it I reckon.

my main tip is brick sessions in training and hard ones at that, you have to teach your body to take the punishment it will in a race but in training its very hard to simulate. I do a bike and run interval session on the Saturday and then in the 8-5 weeks out from the race do a couple of 4hr/2hr or even 5hr/2hr bricks at a decent pace.
You are effectively starting the bike tired from the previous day and will be pretty goosed by the end of it but for me it was the biggest leap forward in my training

This was the single most important thing at my level to reduce my run time by a significant amount.

And one more, aid stations, don't dawdle, people waste SO much time in them, get what you need but keep moving forward, even the pro's walk some aid stations, they know how important it is to get nutrition in but if you spend too long you will see your 9 min per mile pace become 10 min per mile.
