I have a few questions on OWS at SM Park as well as training conditions. Next Sunday I plan on doing a workout at the park on the race course. Is it possible to swim where transition area will be for the race or is it strictly allowed on the beach. I intend to set up a transition and work on both T1 and T2 with biking on the trainer next to the water. Don't ask me why I would do that. The plan calls for it.
Or swimming is only allowed on tue/thur when both clubs have ows/brick sessions.
Thanks.

Has anyone gone out to SMP for the OWS sessions they have during the week? It doesn't begin for another week or so, but I was curious as to what kind of set up they have, and if there is any sort of structure to it.
Thanks!

You will only be able to swim at the beach and inside the buoys.  Parks and Rec only allows OWS during the Tuesday and Thursday session starting the first week in June.

Yeah, except for the Tues/Thurs OWS sessions, swimming is only allowed inside the roped off area at the swim beach. You could swim along the back edge I guess, but it wouldn't be an optimal training setup. Not very long, and kind of like swimming in the free swim area of a pool instead of in a lap lane.

On Tues/Thurs evenings, they post lifeguards along the OWS buoys that are positioned just past the normal swim area. The distance of the OWS route is much debated. I think it is supposed to be 250yds. I'd say that last year it was more like 225yds tops (though several people who thought they were PR'ing their swims didn't like my estimate).

One thing to note, make sure you wait for the lifeguards to get positioned before you start swimming. They get cranky if people start early.

Where do you pay for the SM open water swim?  Do they have someone their to take your money?  Also, do many people do bricks (Swim to bike) during this time?

Thanks

At the entrance to the swim beach there's a lifeguard office where you pay. Same building as the changing rooms/bathrooms.

Lots of people bring their bike along and ride around the park before/after the swim.

I know where you don't want to do that. Clinton State Park boat docks, race venue. Last Saturday I chickened out when I was about to enter while two water mocasins (spelling error probably) had their leisurely swim in front of me. To drive off later and stop 50 meters up the road to let a rattle snake cross the road.

Oh, snakes.  Yay!

I think someone mentioned to me the OWS at Shawnee Mission start next Tuesday, June 2nd.  Sound right? I'm planning on giving it a whirl anyway.
