Subject: Thoughts after seeing the Olympic swimming trials ...
So MRS2Tony and I went to the Olympic swimming trials this weekend and I had a few random thoughts:

  • .. How the heckfire are these people so danged fast???

  • .. How the heckfire are these people so danged fast and make it look so danged easy!?

  • .. How the heckfire do I learn to swim that fast???

  • .. People who know nothing about swimming shouldn't say `Fifty meters? Oh that seems pretty easy.' Uh, yeah, in 23 seconds? Try it then report back to me after it takes you 60.

  • .. The wetsuits, while faster, cover too much.

  • .. the buttcrack, guys, really?

  • .. The venue (Qwest Center Omaha) was AWESOME!

  • .. Male swimmers are freaky fit. And freaky buff. I have to say it's tough being a man and taking your SO to one of those because normal men can't compare. I mean, I'd like to think I'm in decent shape, but these guys were just sick.

  • .. Female swimmers are equally as buff but don't show it as much as the guys. But I guess I like more `normal' women, so it was more of a visual treat for MRS2Tony than MR2Tony.

Their speed makes me want to cry.

But, holy mother of GOD, those guys' shoulders!!! Ridiculous! And, I do not mind looking at them in their little spandex-y oufits...

I walked by the TV and my wife was watching that... I was like whoa man that's like a half centimetre from your junk flipping over the top of the suit. It's that low. How are they keeping that from rolling down a bit and exposing their propeller?

A lot of them wear those one piece thingies, though, so no worries about junk falling out.

I watched some of this with my SO and had similar reactions to Mr. T, except for the dual goggle thing.

I could not believe they were so fast. I'm thinking to myself, "Are they SURE that's 50M?" Man.

My SO was quite impressed with their training results as well. It was bad enough watching Nadal earlier, but then I had to show a bunch of guys in Speedo suits on the screen. Of course, I am chastised for some reason when I am impressed with Sharapova's training.

I just wonder why they're not hitting and dunking each other.  They should put 8 people in 2 lanes and let them fight it out.  We can relate to that.

    I kept wondering...

...so you spend $500 on a suit, shave all your body hair, wear two swim caps and practice, practice, practice all to get super streamlined...

...and then some of the girls were wearing necklaces and earings...????

Hey... if you spend ALL your free time for 10 years in the pool, you too might make it to the Trials... and then again maybe not.

I know 3 of the women who made it to the trials. They have been swimming since they were 5, are constantly training, in an outdoor pool, year round, before school, after school, on weekends, in the rain....etc.... Many of them are also keeping great grades up.

Swimming in the US is extremely competitive. For each one of the women who made it into the trials, there are another 10 women who are trying equally hard, putting in the same number of hours, just attempting to shave off a secord or two a 50.

I'm really confused. How do you NOT wear only one pair of goggles? Can you put two pairs on at once?

    hahaha that's funny.

I don't know the story about Mr2Tony and his 2 pairs of goggles; I've tried asking him about it before but he balks every time. Maybe you can squeeze an explanation out of him?

How the heckfire are these people so danged fast and make it look so danged easy!?

x2. Watching Michael Phelps swim is kind of mesmerizing. He's just loping along, making it look like a cooldown swim, and yet he's TEARING through the water. Incredible.

Last night, at least I think it was last night, they were showing slow-motion footage of him dolphin kicking under water (after diving off the block, I think) and then doing butterfly. Oh. My. God.

Let's just say it made me think about doing VERY naughty things to one of those swimmer boys...

My first thought was that it was strange they would do the Olympic trials in a 25 meter pool.  It was only later I realized that using super-human strength and speed, it was a 50 meter pool.

They question is - can they juggle?

Yeah...that made me sad when the women did 400 meters in a bit over 4 minutes. My most recent 400 meter time (in practice, but I was kinda haulin') was 8:22...yeah...

Good point, and I believe one of the winners had earrings. I couldn't see if they were Speedo or Nike though.

    trixie - 2008-07-07 3:45 PM Heckfire?

    x2 .

when i was watching i spent a lot of time saying, "oh my gawd, look at that body, hooooootttttttt!!!" while my dear husband just rolled his eyes at me.  he felt better when i told him he has a swimmers body too, just not quite so cut .

did any of you notice that several of the swimmers have an uneven stroke cadence, phelps being the most obvious one?  it was quite interesting to me, i was thinking of trying it just to see if it would make me fast .
