I have finally sucked it up and decided not to guess anymore and have signed up for a LT test to finally find out my correct training zones. It will be Feb. 19 & 20 with seperate test for both the run(sat) and ride(sun). I am curious to see how far off my questimates have been in the past.

Mike,

I just read your post and wanted to make a quick suggestion. I think it's a great idea to establish THRZ's through testing in a lab or field test this early in the season as it gives you specific zones for the balance of the Winter and into the Spring. What you may want to look at though is changing the date of the bike test to the following week. If you do a true LT test on Saturday, if you're like most of us, the fatigue you have from this test will carry over into Sunday and therefore impact the validity of those results.

Just a thought since you're going to spend the $$ to have this done, you want to be sure the results are accurate.

Yep, I concur with Brian (who wouldn't). However, don't do what I do...I'm getting bike and run LT tests done this week but bike on wed night and run on friday morning.

This is normally "too close for comfort" but my coach knows me very very well (he's doing the LT test) and so he'll be able to sense any fatigue related LT issues on the run portion.

Hate to ask a stupid question, but what kind of place (lab) does this and approx. how much does it cost?

Thanks

A local state university usually has a sports medicine degree and they have testing equipment there.  I got my initial one done at University of Illinois at Chicago.

Call the university department that is in charge of any sports medicine type degree and they should be able to direct you to the right place.

The ones I got done were $50 then about 8 months later it was $55 for the test.  So perhaps today its $60 but should vary slightly geographically.

I agree about it being ideal to have more time between test but I don't have a choice, a promoter of races is sponsoring a local beginning clinic and this is part of it. The cost is $75 for one and $125 for each.

I just spoke to my coach about this.  He said that if you are using this test to get your "base" trng zones as opposed to ALL of your zones (which is what you'll be using for the next few months anyway) and don't have the test go past 4.0 m/mol, the test results should be accurate enough.
