Subject: Anyone done Ft. Desoto Tri?

I need a Sprint Tri the weekend of August 16-17 as my first Tri and a warmup (so to speak) for my Oly Tri at the end of September.

I initially was planning on doing Silver Springs August 17, but i went this morning and watched the 1st in the series and it seemed highly unorganized.    The only other Tri's i see for that weekend are Ft Desoto and Daytona Beach.

Wondering if anyone has done this Tri before or could tell me if it's a good event for a first time race.

I did the Duathlon last year (same time/date as tri). It as actually my first ever race. It is a good race. The bike course is flat straight and closed to traffic. Fast course. Very well run race but Ft Desoto is HOT! There really is no shade on the course. I would recommend it but hydrate well.

I am racing the du again this year. Really want to see how much I have improved.

I did the race at ft. desoto around halloween last year. It was a great race, very well organized. I would do it again. Theres plenty of parking, though we had to park in grass and walk a bit.

I did the Publix Ft. DeSoto race the past two years. Two years ago it was so fun, they had breakfast for athletes and families, then cooked hamburgers and hotdogs afterwards, and Sat. night had a big party at Columbia restaurant with free food and drinks and lots of prizes.

Last year there was no breakfast, no grilling (maybe they had some sandwiches but I don't think so), and we had to stand around in the hot waiting for awards and prizes that day, no party.

As for the actual triathlon, I've done 3 there, and it's easy and fast and fun, but HOT HOT HOT. Also, if you don't like to run on concrete, skip this one, it is all sidewalk for the run.

The park itself is just beautiful.

I'm not planning to do the race again this year, tho', just too hot that time of year, and no shade to speak of anywhere, even for spectators.

I did Fort Desoto earlier this year as my 1st tri.  It is a great place to do a tri for sure.  I did a Publix event last month and was pleased with it.

I'm planning on doing the tri that weekend along with a bunch of people from Lakeland.  I think it's going to be a hot one!

Plan on doing Top Gun on Saturday. This is my fourth Ft Desoto Tri. Probably by best place to go .
