Subject: Which component to upgrade?
Hi all!

Been thinking about upgrading some components recently. I'm looking for the best speed/price ratio...what do I upgrade to gain the most speed without breaking the bank? I'm thinking a high end around $150-$200...don't have a whole lot to pour into it right now. Am I better off waiting till later and upgrading? Here's my specs:

2003 Merida 903-18 Frame, 60cm. (company from Taiwan...seems to do business everywhere but the US)

My bike, Yeah! - http://www.advancetraders.com.au/2003meridaroad903.htm

Shimano Sora hubs, brakes
Shimano Tiagra derailleurs
Shimano Tiagra crank (53,39)
Ritchey Aero Wheelset http://www.ritcheylogic.com/wheels.htm
Split Second Aero Bars (and have plans to switch to bar end shifting and replace the handle bars)

Suggestions?
Thanks!

Bottom line, lighter wheels make a faster bike. You can replace other stuff for less money, but anytime you can reduce rotating weight on a bike, do it. I bought Shimano R535 wheels last spring, and they made a huge difference (Plus, they look really cool ) for only about $300.

Also, if you are going to replace part of the drivetrain (derailleurs, cogs, chainrings, chain), you should replace it all to ensure that your shifting performance doesn't suffer.

Most bang for your buck (edited):

  1. Clipless pedals/shoes (since you don't mention having them)
  2. Engine (hire a coach for a few months)
  3. Put the money in a "new bike fund" and upgrade the whole bike down the road.

You're not going to get much in the way of wheels for $150-200 and any component upgrade at that price point is not going to be significant.
