Subject: Cleat question
My Specialized MTB shoes are second hand with SPD cleats. There are two sets of two holes that the cleats can screw into (diagram: toe of shoe : : back of shoe, with the colons being the holes), about 1/4-1/2 inch apart. On my right shoe, on the set of holes I like to use (the forwardmost), the prior owner must have cross threaded the innermost screw (it would be the lower left hole on my beautiful diagram) and stripped the threads. I was able to make it work for a while, but now it isn't. Can one replace the "hole" part that is part of the shoe? I appears separate from the shoe, but I don't know what to do. I suppose I can move the cleats to the other set of holes, but I don't know what that will do to my biking. Thanks for your advice.

My biking shoes (shimano) had two long holes in them when I bought them, so it looked more like Front = Back.

See the picture below (of specialized shoes) and you'll see two "slits" with the "holes" inside them.

The Front : : Back configuration for my shoes did NOT develop until AFTER I inserted the inner portion of the cleat into which the clip screwed.  Hence, I think you may be able to remove the insert from the shoe and "flip" the inner portion of the cleat so as to move the good threads to the front.

Of course, I could be nucking futs, or wucking frong, cuz I've no experience with the specialized products.

Thanks for your answer. Mine have the "slits" where the holes are placed. Inside the shoe, there appears to be an insert that can be removed, but it is glued in very tightly. I will see if there is any way to loosen it.

I strongly agree with Lara.  Any local LBS would help you out in a matter of minutes if they are worth their salt.  Even if you haven't shopped there yet, they realize that bikers/ triathletes are pretty loyal and will do a lot of business with people they trust.  Also, the parts you describe are pretty common; the LBS may have some second-hand ones on hand to swap out.

I took it to my local tri shop (where I bought my bike) for advice and they switched it out with a spare they had for free.  I am an even more loyal customer now.  Thank you for your advice.
