Have you ever signed up for an event at the last minute? I have a close friend who is infamous for signing up for events at the last minute, often the morning of the event. She dragged her feet and missed out on a local tri this year that filled up before she made up her mind.

Since I DNFed my second tri last Sat., a neighbor suggested I do a tri at Pinchot State Park which is next Sunday. I usually like to sign up for things as early as possible, so this is unusual for me. I found another sprint tri I want to do at the end of Sept., which leaves me lots of time to prepare. But now this Pinchot tri, only 5 days away, is starting to gnaw at me. I did this course as a duathlon back in May, so I'm familiar w/the course. Didn't do the tri at the time because, 1) I was still swimming impaired and, 2) I don't yet own a wetsuit. Obviously won't need a wetsuit this time of year, and I would be breaking my own advice of swimming an event without having done the swim leg prior to the event.

Should I, or shouldn't I? I not worried about the swim, though I may not get to the lake prior to the event, and the bike leg has that killer hill. The swim is 3/4 mile double loop. One reason I am considering this is specifically for the swim. The tri in Sept. is in an indoor pool and, I can NOT believe I'm about to say this, it is only a 500 yard swim and I would like to end the season with an event that's a little more than just 500 yards.

Hit me now, hit me now.

Why not do both?

I don't think not swimming in the lake before hand is an issue.  I've done two sprints this year having never been in those lakes before race day.

As with anything, what are your intended goals? If to win overall or win age group, jumping in w/o a plan isn't likely to achive those goals. If your goal is to measure current fitness, do a race on that particular venue or to have fun, then of course! Sign up, pin on a number and write a race report!

My first ever tri I decided to do it and signed up the day before.  It was a sprint and I was 12 or so weeks into training for another sprint a month later.

Unless, like another poster stated, you only want to do it with a chance to podium, do the race, have fun with it and manage your expectations.

I signed up for my first tri only 6 days before. I was training for an Oly and decided I needed a practice race. I think it worked out better because I didn't overthink it and I didn't have as much time to get nervous.

Go for it and have fun!

I signed up for 2 marathons last year less than 1 week before the race to round out a Triple in 8 weeks. (I Ran PB Times at each of the races)

I am mulling over a Sprint this Sunday but probably won't register for it (And make up my mind) until Saturday when I head down to the expo.

I normally sign up for events about 2-3 weeks before they start. That is pretty spur of the moment compared to how most people plan out their season.

I have registered for 5Ks before on the same day that they were taking place.

I'd do both races!!  Why not??  I signed up for a half marathon on Friday night and the race was on Sunday (after asking BT what their opinion was ) and had a blast.  I also PRed.  Not a bad day for a last minute decision!

I sign up for a lot of races at the last minute.

The four last runs that I did were basically - Hey, it's 5:30, I'm up, I might as well go race.

My first marathon attempt ....... signed up for it the day before the race and hadn't run more than 3 times that year (and only about 3 - 4 miles each of those).  And to top that off, I hadn't really run much at all in 12 years at that point ......... we're talking maybe a combined 100 miles in that timeframe.

Needless to say, I only made it to the 1/2 point.  But that was STILL farther than I had ever run before!!  (My old record was 11 miles).

After that I decided I kind of needed to train for that sort of race and it has been "running lots" ever since.
