I've added a few sets of this killer to my usual leg routine and wow, talk about a great little range of motion that will make your legs suffer. It's the "Bulgarian Split Squat" and it's great for: Balance and stability while working your quads, hammies, core, and forearms. It's a little hard to explain so just go to the link. Click on 'Get Fit', then 'Legs' and it's the first one. The Bulgarian is essentially a single leg squat, so be sure to expect some soreness the next day or two. Probably a little more appropriate in the off-season, but I love that post-workout tingle too much! Enjoy

Great find. Me and my training partner have been doing these for over a month now. We are still sore as can be the next day, and these are a huge contributing factor.

We do them at the end of our workout, for our last 3 sets. They are killer that is for sure. Make sure to not let your knee go past your toes, the main focus is not to be on your quads but mostly your hams and glutes.

At this point we are trying to switch from doing upper and lower body workouts seperate...to full body workouts twice a week. On full body workout days doing these last will feel like you will never make it out alive! Great times for sure.

Also, these can be done with holding a dumbell in each hand to your side...works less on your core though.

Thanks for the tip on knee position - that's a great point. It certainly does get the glutes quite a bit. I can see why a full-body, twice a week routine would be more appropriate for triathlon training by allowing more time for muscle recovery and more time & effort put towards the tri. I will give it a go. My body could use some diversification.

For the past couple months I have been doing mostly super-sets with lighter weights, and shorter breaks. It's been very successful and the workouts are more fun and intense. Any other lifts you know that pack a punch?

If others have having a problem viewing the link, here's another one:

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Quadriceps/BBSingleLegSplitSqua...

If anyone ever needs an exercise demonstration/video demo, www.exrx.net is the go to place for that. I think they have almost every exercise known to humans.

I've also added the Bulgarian to my repertoire; it's quite good.

As for other exercises that pack a good punch, if you're doing a total body routine, the power clean and push press combo will pretty much work your entire body provided you know how to properly do a power clean. I've read a couple of articles that have suggested that, in the on-going debate of whether weight training benefits endurance performance, doing exercises that develop power (e.g., the power clean) have been shown to be beneficial. Even one of BT's staunchest members of the "weight training doesn't help endurance" camp has noted that plyometric training, a form of training to develop power, can improve running performance. Plyometrics is an advanced form of training, and is a form of "shock" training, which can be tough on joints that are already stressed from miles of running as they involve lots of jumping. You're better off starting with the power clean, then moving on to plyometrics if you wish.

Here's a link that will take you to the main exercise page:

Here's a decent video on doing a power clean:

One last video here. If you think you may have trouble doing the power clean, don't risk injury trying to do it. Do the one-arm dumbbell snatch. Although you won't be pressing the weight you'll still develop great shoulder stability as well as whole body power with this exercise.
