Subject: Yikes...chest pain during workouts!
I have begun to experience chest pain after about 20 minutes of exercise, has happened both on the bike and the run. I put it down to poor air quality the first couple of times but now must take this seriously. Have seen my Doc, with a list of tests that my doctor-husband wants me to have. Hopefully it is just plain old exercise induced asthma, but I have an auto-immune disorder that puts me at increased risk for pulmonary embolus!!

Have been told I can continue to train and have been perscribed an inhaler to try before workouts. I am waiting for a spiral CT and pulmonary function testing, both will hopefully be done next week, as well as various blood work.

I was supposed to do my first half marathon on Sept 21....

Wish me luck!

Wow, that's scary.  I'm glad you're getting it checked out and having tests done.

I hope you're able to do your triathlon, but don't put your health in danger.  There will always be other traithlons.

Good Luck!!!

Scary stuff!  Be careful.  I met a lady that had chest pain during a 10K...went to her Dr and she had a cardiac cath....a major coronary artery was kinked off.  Wound up missing a sesason for open heart surgery but she's back at it now, looks great!

Chest pain can be caused by many things with some being very serious to some just causing discomfort. Its hard to draw any conclusions from the brief description. In addition to cardiac related issues, there can be chest wall pain which is musculoskeletal or pluerisy which is lung tissue rubbing on chest wall. Some types of indigestion can cause chest pain that can resemble cardiac symptons as well as some forms of asthma. Sometimes the exact cause can be difficult to diagnose. I have no formal medical training but have suffered from all of the above to some degree over the past ten years. Stress also can exerbate the condition. There are several tests that can be performed to rule out many cardiac conditions (echocardiography and cardiovascular stress test) and give you some peace of mind. Good luck with your situation.

Granted I'm just going on the little bit of info you're giving, but I'd say a PE is extremely unlikely.

If the CT and workup for exercise-induced asthma are normal, though (which I'd suspect they will be) a visit to a cardiologist would be a good next step....

Good luck, and hopefully you'll be at 100% soon!

I know that a PE is unlikely, but knowing that I have antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, the Docs are being very cautious. I had an episode of severe chest pain after my second son was born that scared the pants off of everybody....

On a positive note, during a 6k run today I felt great with no pain at all, it seems to kick in only after workouts of a longer duration. Don't know if this is typical for EIA .

Thanks for the replies!
