I'm doing my 1st Tri in October, and I have the option to register as Athena or as a beginner triathlete(3 races or less). I'm thinking I would be better registering as an Athena vs. a beginner. I'm 5'10'' and 160. What does everyone think?

I had the same choice for my first tri and decided to register as an athena.  It is usually a smaller group and if you are good (read fast), you stand a better chance of reaching the podium.  I am slow and knew I had no hope of reaching the podium either way but in reality I started in a wave with first time women and athena so it really did not matter much.

Good luck in your first whichever way you decide to register.

I would check the results from the last couple of years and see where you best fit in with the finish time you expect to have. Chances are athena results will be closer to what it will be on race day but beginner you never know.

Its all who shows up. I raced Clydesdale once and came in 4th. If I would have ran my a/g I would have came in 1st. Like I said you never know.

Do they use a beginner only wave?  If so, and if you don't like the chop chop of swimming with big fish, then go with that group.  Athenas usually get lumped in with Clydes, and sometimes the swim is very crowded and 'physical' as a result.

Just a consideration... but hey, I love racing Athena regardless, -Sunny

This particular race is in its inagural year...

In terms of the timing, they are starting the swim as a time trial.

Go as a beginner only.  You only get to do it once.
