Subject: Best Goggles for Half-Iron Distance Swim?

Anyone have any really good goggles for open water swimming?  I use Swedes for training in the pool.  I don't think these will work well for a half-iron swim that I have coming up.

Also, any suggestions on how to prevent fogging would be appreciated.  I practiced in open water last weekend and my goggles kept fogging up really bad, couldn't sight at all.  I don't want that to be a problem during the 1.2

I have aquasphere vistas and love them. Did and IM swim with them and had no leaks and no fog. I also think they are very comfortable. Best $25 I've spent in a while.

The best goggles are the ones that are the most comfortable and do not leak.  If you look, a lot of uber-swimmers wear swedes while they race any distance (including when going long).

Why?

...because that is what they train with.

That said, some swede users do not use them during mass starts and/or rough open water swims as the lack of cushioning around the sockets makes getting kicked in the face by an errant swimmer hurt more.

The  bottom line is that one set of goggles is not better than another for a particular distance.  It is instead a personal choice based upon comfort, fit and not leaking.

Good luck with your half!

The only downside I see to the Swedish goggles in open water is if you take an elbow to the eye. Otherwise, they'd work fine.

Also, on the fogging question. TYR makes an anti-fog spray that sells for $4 or $5. It has worked very well for me. After a couple of weeks, my goggles always started to fog but now I spray them lightly, dry the excess, and I have not had any fogging. Great stuff.

Spit works great for the fogging.  I had to keep doing it for a few weeks before it really started to work.  Almost like it has a cummulative affect.  Also, I have found the spit needs to be of the thicker nature, not all watered down.

I have not had any fogging issues since I started doing the spit religiously before each swim.

I used a mask-type goggle (similar to the Aquasphere Vista, but was the Ironman brand) for my last OLY and I thought it worked great...much better than regular goggles that seal over each eye. I feel that the one-piece design of a mask-type goggle creates a better seal against the face. JMO

Aquasphere XP. Wore out the first pair already after about two years. I have the photochromic for sunny days, clear lens for clouldy days.

I had a pair of Swedes that I have used for a REALLY long time (1995). They broke this year. I have used those goggles in countless HIM’s , Sprints Oly’s and even IM. However, like Jim said, it can get nasty if you get hit in the face.

Give Zoggs Wiro a shot. They are expensive though.

I love my new Nike Remoras but everyone is different so what works for me may not work for you.  If you're going to try something new you better get them soon so you get a few workouts in to make sure they do work for you.  And I concur on the spit thing.  I bought the TYR stuff, no help.  In the middle of my first race I was so badly fogged that I couldn't see where I was going so I had to stop, use a surfboard and spit in them.  They didn't fog for the rest of the race.
