Subject: Heartrate Monitor/GPS
Hi..

I am wondering what system most triathletes have in place as far as their Heart Rate Monitor/GPS system?

I have a Garmin and I LOVE it.. However, it can't go in the water... I need a product I can wear for the swim, bike and run, but so far I can't find one that accomodate me during all 3 sports? Generally a regular heart rate monitor isn't gps (so I can watch my split mile times) and the garmin can't go in the water..!

Their must be a product I haven't stumbled across yet.... Help!

Thanks!

TS

I don't use a HR monitor, but......

I use my Garmin 205 for run and bike training, have a pool lap counter and Timex IM watch for swimming. I also use the Timex for races. It's got 100 laps with split timers and such. I know this topic has come up before any many people who train with HRM do not use it in races. But some do.

Maybe its just me (and I'm a noob), but I dont see the value in having GPS/heart rate monitoring on the swim.. it's usually a short distance (2.4 miles tops, unless you're doing a swim only event) and to add, you can't even look at it if you are actually swimming...

I'm perfectly happy with my 305 for running and biking though.

I use my Timex HRM on the swim.  I start the race wearing both my Timex and Garmin HRM straps.  I leave the Garmin 305 on the bike.  I switch it off the bike to my wrist for the run.  I wind up with the Timex on one wrist and the 305 on the other, at the end of the race.  What a technogeek!

Polar is waterproof. It's not GPS, but it measures distance.

I had the same question a few months ago and after fussing around for a while I decided on the GArmin 405. You have to give up the swim piece but most of my swimming is in the pool with a big clock on the wall so I can see splits, overall time, etc. And HR in the pool is something I could live without. The main reason I picked Garmin over Polar or Suunto is the GPS and NEVER HAVING TO CALIBRATE it, it being accurate on trails (pods tend to get less accurate when your stride is not a constant length-- or so I hear) and being able to measure things like your speed on a boat (OK, useless for training but was cool when I was on a ferry and could see that we were going X miles per hour).

I just wish Garmin had made the silly thing waterproof...I don't fully understand what goes into making it waterproof rather than resistant. I would not have minded something a little heavier to make it waterproof. Anyway, that is my 2 cents. I have not yet found something with GPS that is fully waterproof.

I also have several pairs of running shoes  (home, work, car, etc) so taking a pod on and off constantly would have been a pain for me.

All in all though, I love my 405! :-)

I use my 305 while I swim.  I just put it in a baggie under my swim cap.  HR doesn't really work but distance and time work great.

Not an expert, but I'm sure mine is not accurate. Some runs it measures long, some it measures short. If it were consistently long or consistently short that would be one thing, but it varies immensely, on longer runs it's been as much as a mile off! My stride is not consistent depending on my hip injury and how much it's acting up so I really should have gone for the gps.

Try the Suunto X9i, claims to be water resistant to 100m...

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see any HRM functions.

I bought the 405 first and foremost because I am a runner.  I didn't get hooked on this tri thing until volunteering for IM WI!  At any rate, the 405 rules, and I can do without using it on the swim.  Kinda expensive, though...
