Pre-race routine:

Relaxed. The weather was already too hot.
Event warmup:

No warmups
Swim
  • 19m 36s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 27s / 100 meters
What would you do differently?:

Be more aggressive in the midst of flailing hands and legs and the breast-strokers. I was giving them too much slack and in the process slowing myself considerably.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Run
  • 34m 58s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 59s  min/km
Comments:

weather was extremely hot. So happened that Singapore was the hottest in 29 years! There was also haze conditions due to numerous bush fires from mainland.
What would you do differently?:

nothing much I could've done about the weather. Train more, discipline on water-intake, forgo fuelbelt for 5km runs.
Post race
Warm down:

massage

What limited your ability to perform faster:

swim: my wave was tightly contested in the swim leg. not enough space to maneuver. the inexperienced masses prevented me from going faster. must find a way to break out of masses.

run: weather was the main factor.

hmm...how long was the run?

Are u a strong swimmer? If so, u should go out FAST on the swim.

I'll be there next year...but I'm a newbie swimmer..hahah...

I am not a strong swimmer, neither am I a weak swimmer. I've been training very regularly though. In the pool, my stroke count is about 35-38 strokes per 50m, and my gliding is comfortable. I can typically do a 14 min 800m in a relaxed effort.

Swimming with everyone else in the open sea is different. All you need are inexperienced swimmers who do not sight and they keep cutting into your path PERPENDICULARLY! There was this chap who keeps splashing about and kicking really hard. I keep trying to avoid him but he swims in a zig zag manner. He's fast, but he keeps getting in my way! it was irritating. THought I shook him off at the first turning but there he was again!

I think my run was 35 minutes. I wasn't satisfied with it.

I was in that race too. Maybe I,m the blur chap that does the zigzag swim cause I have problems swimming freestyle straight in open water and cutting into other's path always going to one side and have to switch to breaststroke just to keep on course. My apologies....

The weather was just too hot. There's something I don,t understand about triathlon and biathlon here in singapore. Why do they always conduct these races in the late morning when the sun is high up in the sky. Why not have it in early morning like other running event. I just don,t understand the logic as if the race isn,t hard enough have to make us look more garang or make it more siong is it???

steven! So you're the one! Which wave were you in? I was in Wave 4. haha... I don't think it's you. There were so many swimmers!

If it was you... okay... at least you own up. I forgive you.

With regards to the race times, I have a feeling it's due to the tide times. It's easier to swim in high tide. I think visibility is better too.

Either it's about tide times or it's just bad organisation. haha..

How high can the wave at Sentosa Tanjong beach be ??? It's in a lagoon with barriers etc.so I don,t think the tide will go too high... Should have started the event much earlier.

i think the tide difference between my wave (4th) and the 8th wave was like 2.0m! I thought I saw the depth marker to be at the 4m mark when i started. I saw my friend doing the relay at the 8th wave start and the marker was slightly below the 2m mark. I guess if it gets too low, everyone could've done the 800m wade in the sea!

On another note, are you good at running? Are you taking part in the New Balance Duathlon? I'm looking for a relay partner to do the run.
