I don't think it's a question of knowing when as much as it is a question of do I have the time to put the training in. Looking at your HIM at Vineman you have the right attitude to go the distance. I personally like doing the IM distance races and have a blast doing them. For you, adding a few hours a week training and keeping your positive attitude is all you need. You're ready!!

BTW - With Yanti on your side you are MORE than ready. You both have the right attitude about this wonderful sport. Good luck!!

I looked at many plans and paid particular attention to how heavy the workload was at the start, AND what the maximum workload was during the peak weeks.

If I felt that I could start the plan comfortably without fear of burning out or over training AND felt like I could dedicate the time the plan needed, I was physically ready.

I was mentally ready to tackle an IM after the first time I saw it on TV as a kid.  Took 15 years or so to start the journey, but I was hooked!

Theoretically, tou got to look at the plans, look at your past races, look at the time you are going to be able to commit and decide based on that.

Your training will tell you if your ready or not. It's all there for you to evaluate as long as you don't live along the river denial. This is why it's great to keep track of your training as it doesn't lie.

I didn't, at least not when I first registered.

But I know I felt the same way about a HIM, and now I have absolutely no doubts about that distance (finishing at least), so I just hoped that the IM would be similar.

the dfifference between HIM and IM is major. As an example- a century ride- 6-8 hours lasts about as long as the HIM. I have done nothing that has gotten me into double digit workouts, other than mountain bike trips.

I think the real THRILLS (fears) are more in the area of will I be able to make it on nutrition, hydration, and the unknown of what it is like after 10, 11, 12, 13 hours.

I say that to keep the thread going.

You've pretty much got to sign up a year ahead of time so you've got that amount of time to MAKE yourself ready. You'll never really know until you sign up, execute the plan and do the deal. If you even remotely think you're ready, you ARE ready.

"You Don't" to quote Byrne and Friel.

I think like others have said, it is just a matter of putting in the training and taking care of the things that you have control over. In the end, with Long Course Racing anyway, results are more about how we deal with the unexpected things that happen out there than anything else.

Still, there are days when we doubt that we can do it, but once completed, we will never forget that we DID IT!

Don't sweat it Dolores, you're ready and I will be standing in line right behind you and Faeron on Registration Day

YIKES! I know I want to do it, I know I can - with training and a plan - which I have. I'm askeered! Thanks for all the input here - I just kind of wanted to hear some other thoughts on the matter besides my own.   I got a little shook up too by Matt's accident Sunday - its not that I don't know I could get hurt doing this but hey, I could get hurt!!  My crappy swim didn't help but I do know I can make that better too.  Hell, I finished the swim.

the difference between HIM and IM is major.

SAY THAT AGAIN!

Just because you can handle a HIM... doesn't = you are ready for an IM. Doing an IM is not like doubling a HIM.

I am a mere mortal athlete and for me the IM training was a killer. It was hard. Real hard. Then again I hate getting up at 5:30 AM to go workout.

Even the race itself is very different. Going for 5-7 hours is very different from going for 10-17 hours. VERY DIFFERENT.

I truly believe that someone is ready for IM though, who has a bit of base under them and who has the WILL and the DRIVE to do one. Without the mental fortitude to buckle down, you will miss training sessions and not do what you need to do cross the finish line.

But, the flip side of an IM is that anything can go wrong race day. And one thing going wrong might be the one thing that makes you NOT cross that finish line. It's so easy for nutrition, an injury, a broken bike, etc to ruin your day. You can be trained and ready but if your nutrition is off, you might be screwed.

Doing an IM is also about being mentally strong. That means if something does go wrong, you calmly think of Plan B and keep moving forward. You don't let yourself go into a mental dark hole because of something going wrong.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

For me, I thought I was ready to "try it" when I had a solid base of training under me.  We triathletes tend to become a bit fixated on things.  When IM is what you are constantly thinking about...researching...studying training plans...looking at calendars...etc, you may be at the point where you sign up for one of these things.  I fell hard for the sport of triathlon after watching the 2004 Championships in Kona.  Finishing an IM race became a constant goal of mine.  Hopefully, 7 weeks from now, that goal will ge achieved in Arizona!   I will be ready and baring any of the unplanned, unpredictable events that can ruin my day, I will see that finish line.  16:59:59 or less!!

I think I knew I was ready when I no longer thought of a marathon as a can-I-do-it challange.  I find great motivation in great challanges.

I think watching the finish line for 2 hours in Louisville really reaffirmed for me that I am ready to take on this challenge...

I know I've got the time to commit to it now and the support that I need to get the job done.

Just seeing people cross the finish line in all shapes, sizes and from all walks of life...it was really empowering for me as a spectator.

I know what happended.  When you saw me cross the finish line you said, "OK, if HE can do this, anyone can!"  :-)

Although I've never attempted an IM or registered for one I am planning on it for next year. Do I KNOW I'm ready? Hell no but I believe fully I can be and that I'm more motivated by huge, bigger than life goals than by staying on the side lines.

And here are a few thoughts that run through my head when I think about just how crazy this is:

"Fortune favors the bold" - Homer (I think?)
"Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid" - Goethe
