Subject: 2.5 minutes off the without trying?

So I ran 2 miles today . . . for the second time. The fastest I have ever run a mile before (recently) was 9:17 minutes and it was on a flat surface . . . and only for a mile. Today, however, I ran on hills for 2 miles and it only took me 15 minutes. Last time I ran the two miles, it was on a flat surface, and it took me 21 minutes. I took 6 minutes off in one week? I'm not complaining . . . I'm just wondering how it happened. I did warm up first . . . does that help? But I did warm up last time, too . . . but not for such a long distance. Or are there certain times of the month that a person (a woman) gets better? Maybe I'm just getting better . . . ? I am totally baffled . . . but not compaining!

Now I'm wondering if I measured the distance correctly . . . maybe I only went 1.5 miles. Okay, I'm going to have to figure this out. Hahaha. Sorry about this strange message.

first of all - if it's accurate - CONGRATS!!  7.5 min miles is fast!(certainly by my standards!).

and in regards to 'timing' - I do know that *that* time for me will be *worse*....I suck at pretty much everything I do for those first couple of days...

I'd question the accuracy of the measurements personally as well.

Still, congrats on getting out there and seeing improvement regardless!!

Yeah, I suspect your measurements were off. I've done that before - I got all jazzed about an 8 minute mile only to find I actually ran .5 miles less. Sucks.

There are a few reasons why you might have gotten that much faster in a week.  First is accuracy of distance...that has already been pointed out... second is the first time you ran that distance, your body wasn't use to it...Your body is not getting use to it and this is your actual base...(if that makes sense).  Third is, you were running hills.  It is possible that there was more down hill than up hill, so you were going faster than you would on a flats...  I am sure there are other reasons...or people that can explain them better...but that's my .02.

1. Fantastic job!! Bask in the glow of your accomplishment!

2. Or....measure the route again!

Personally, I vote for #1 !! I had similar experiences last fall, it seemed that I was just getting faster and faster, I put it down to increased fitness. I considered myself a fair runner for a newb. Fast forward to this summer when I stopped using the NikePlus to measure and started using my new Garmin. I got the shock of a lifetime...the distances were WAY off and I realized that I actually run like a turtle with an anvil on its back. I was horribly discouraged and actually hated running for a while because of this, but I'm now more run focused and my times are improving for real now!!

Okay, okay, guys. Thanks for all the encouragement. I was super-stoked about my supposed improvement . . . so much so, that I IMMEDIATELY posted it on this website. THEN I hopped in the Neon and drove the route (drumroll): 1.55 miles. STILL, it wasn't my slowest time ever for that distance. So at least it was a little improvement?

A little off topic, but why are you worried about how fast you're going in training?  If you're still a beginner, the majority of your running should be at an easy pace (or Z2ish if you subscribe to HR training).  Just do lots of consistent running at that pace, adding distance slowly as you go, and then compare either race results or race paced runs.
