Subject: About me
Hello everyone. I'm a newbie both to this site and to "tri" ing. I gave triathlon to myself as a "New Year's Gift" and a goal after quitting smoking in January 04. I've been training now in my aerobic base for 7 weeks, and it feels great! I'm going to do a 10K for St. Pat's Day in 10 days, and I'm so stoked. I've lost 15 pounds since beginning, and overall I feel really healthy. I joked to my wife that this is the healthiest I've been since high school. I'm 29 now. I live in Manhattan, KS with my wife and our family pets. I'm trying to find workout partners in this area, so if you are anywhere near KS let me know! I've read in some other postings how you are "spring waiting" and I second that. I can't wait for riding and running outside. It's probably another 2 weeks away for consistently good weather. My first tri will be in late May and it's a Sprint distance event. My first goal is just to finish, but I have to admit that I'm pretty competitive. My biggest worry is getting out there and "going too hard" for the first 20 minutes and then hitting the wall. I really need to work on pacing myself in all 3 sports.

I hear you about competitive. But - save your "gas" for the later parts of the event. Better to "finihs" now and have room for improvement in your clas than to "go all out" and maybe come up with an injury. Aim to finish, hope for good placement - but race to race again!

Congrats on the losing the weight and the cigarettes!  I am very competitive myself, but for your first tri you might want to reign in that nature.  If you find you were too conservative, you can make it up on your second one.  You never know how it will turn out until you tri.  Good luck!

That's my plan right now. I'm entered in one tri at the end of May and then another one two weeks later in mid-June. So far so good on "saving the gas" until the end. Many times after long training, I have a lot left over and could go on, but I stop and save the gas. So many articles I've read say, "train your plan" and my plan involves slow, aerobic heart-rate work outs. So far so good!

With 7 weeks of training, you are probably hooked on exercise for life now.  That is the big thing.  The Tri events are just icing.  Have fun and post often.
