Hello all. Just thought I'd share my results for my first half marathon EVER! It was amazingly fun, and let me just say there is nothing more inspiring that a cheering crowd and 2000+ runners supporting each other along the way! Before the race, I had never run further than 8 miles at one time, so my goal was simply to run the whole way maintaining about a 10-minute mile pace, and to finish strongly--as in, be standing up afterwards! I am happy to report that this race really could not have gone a whole lot better than it did. In fact, I really didn't start "feeling the burn" until around mile 11! In any case, my results are as follows:

485(place out of 1324 female finishers) 4932 Dorian Joye 19 F Grand Coteau LA USA 10:32 (pace) 2:16:25(time)

I ran the first mile really slowly--I think it was around 12 minutes--and the trek over the overpass slowed me down a bit. Still, the important thing is that I feel like I gave it my all. *tear*

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice. I think I've found the perfect pre-race meal(s) because, for once, I had no stomach issues while racing, and plenty of energy! So, I will definately share that in another message for anyone who would like any advice in that area...

Looking forward to hearing about everyone elses race results!
P.S. I looked for the beg. tri people at the clock at 6:30 am this morning and no one was there! Hope you all did well!

Good job D!

Lane and I were there at 6:30, no one else, but we didn't wait long in the drizzle.

Great Job, Dorian,Congrats on finishing your first 1/2 marathon (at a respectable time, I might add). From this point forward, you will have a much different perspective to view the shorter races, like the 5 and 10k's.If you have the perfect pre-race meal, please share - a few (probably 300 or so) of us northern californians are tapering down for our own local 1/2 marathon on Saturday, March the 5th.Great job, take a few days off - and what the heck, sign yourself up for a massage - you deserve it!!!Dennis

can I find my results online? I ran the 1/2 and then left (to pick up my daughter from a slumber party). it was my first also and it was awesome! it's amazing how much easier the long run is when you are surrounded by thousands of people. I plan on doing a 1/2 IM (prairieman) in September and I am now confident that I will be able to finish! Alicia

Hey Dennis! This was my pre-race nutrition the night before and the morning of the half marathon:

Dinner-- Manicotti: 3 shells stuffed with spinach, ricotta cheese, and red pasta gravy
Chicken baked in puffed pastry: 1 and a half puff pastries each with maybe a
half of a half of chicken breast and alouette (or other) herb cream cheese,
seasoned with Tony Chachere's.
non-skimpy servings of French Bread and multigrain bread

Breakfast--(made at 5:00 am) 2 pieces of multigrain toast with butter cooked in the
skillet with 2 eggs
app. 20 oz gatorade (orange is my favorite, but I'm sure it doesn't matter.)

If anyone would like recipes for these (and more) just ask The chicken puff pastries especially are super easy to make.

Wow - That sounds like a lot of Food!!! I may see if I can't come up with something similar. I may stay away from the egg in the morning, as I'm not sure how that would react with my stomach - probabably more towards the bagel with/pb and a little bananna.Great job again, are you quads just a little sore today?????? How do the stairs feel???? Dennis

Yes! Actually, my knees were really sore both the day of and day after--even sitting down, which I thought was strange. Today, however, my legs are still sore, but I don't have the pain in my knees. I was talking to a friend and concluded that running long distances on pavement like that is equivalent to beating your legs with a club! (at least, that's how I felt at the time. lol)

Dorian
Speaking of diet and pre race fuel I find that staying away from simple sugars is a big help.

I did no more than 2 wholegrain bread & natural PB sandwiches and a bowl of plain oatmeal with skimmed milk and 2 plain GU mixed in with it is a perfect pre race breakfast....I have maybe one or two 8 oz glasses of water before the race, my main hydration comes in the days leading up to the race, the water with the food is to aid digestion. 1gr of carbs requires 3gr of water if you are get the most from it.
Interestingly enough an ice cream sandwich or 4-6oz of ice cream the night before is a well known marathon runners "trick" to make their long runs more successful and the east germans did a lot of study and concluded that peanuts were an excellent race food along with other saturated fats like butter (but only in well trained athletes who had been training several years).
I'm not sure what to make of all the nutrition advice recently but the one thing I do know that works is staying away from simple sugar.

thanks

Kevin
