I will have my first Olympic distance in June. What's is the best way to build up the distance? My goal is simple - complete the swimming leg (as well as the trainng) without injury.

John,
Have you seen the training schedules on this website for the Oly tri?
Take a look at the distances - they build over several weeks.

Can you tell us what type of swimmer you are currently (e.g. can swim a couple lengths, swim like a rock, float only, etc.)
That would help us to better help you.....

I have been doing drills and intervals. The longest interval is 2X200 (3 sets with 30 sec. rest). Other drills include 6X50 with 30 sec. rest focusing on body rotation, high elbow..., kick 4x50, breast stroke 3x100. I need to build up endurance to cover 1500M.

Hi John,

Start with working on technique. Either use a coach or purchase a guide, like the Total Immersion swimming guide.
Slowly build up your distance, doing interval sets and perhaps join a masters group.
I have some resources on my website that may also help you, like the Complete Guide to Triathlon Swimming.

Good luck!

john,

The endurance will come with time, it does not come overnight. Besides doing drills for my warmup I always swam as far as I could withour stopping . when I first got in the pool it was but only 40 yard.(20 yard pool). And I kept building from there. With the increasing my warm up swim and practicing my drills I was able to build up to being able to do 2000 yards in 36 -39 minutes. Not terribly fast but will work on speed now that I have the endurance. Good luck in your training. I know you will be succesful.

I have taken to swimming like I learned to run. Start with just swimming. No drills, no speed, Just swim as far as you can. I have no learned that is not the best way(for running either). I still do one day a week where my main set is long. A small warm up and 20 minutes swimming, and stretching and cooldown. At first, you may only be able to do 10 minutes or less, but over time get that one swim a week up to 30 or 40 minutes. That is what a race is like, straight swimming.
