Since I do a  lot of early morning riding, I am in the market for a bike light: one where I can be seen as well as see the road.

 Any suggestions?

For a tail light I don't think you can beat the Planet Bike Superflash... insanely bright for about $20-25..... though you may be asking more about a headlight.

I have this taillight as well and it is the best I have seen and used.

As far as a headlight, I use a 1 Watt light by Planet Bike as well but it is not sold any longer.  Mine uses 4 AA batteries.

I have had several lights and Planet Bike seems to make a better quality product.

If you need a light to really see in complete dark, you are going to have to look into some brighter and more expensive lighting systems.  Most of the lights that are $40 and under are help supplement road lighting and help to be seen by others.

Some add a light onto their helmet as well and this helps to be seen as well as add some more light to where you are looking.

+1 on the Superflash for the rear blinker.

You'll see a lot of good info in the Electronics and Lights forum over at www.bikeforms.net.

I'm a huge fan of the Fenix L2D flashlights.  They are actually small flashlights with incredibly bright lights.  They run on AA batteries (I use rechargeables) and can be mounted easily.  Here's mine on my daily commuter bike.  The Cateye you see is just for backup.

The charge lasts from 2 hours to 55 hours depending on the brightness you choose.  I run mine at 180 lumens (that's very bright!!) so I get about 2 hours.

You can see more info at https://www.fenix-store.com/.  I use the lockblocks from the same sight to mount the light.  The light plus mount cost you about $60 or $70.   Since it's not a bike specific light, you get an incredibly nice flashlight that you can use around the house too!
