I ran in a small, local Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. I've been training for my first marathon, and the purpose of this race was twofold: (1) to take the place my semi-weekly tempo run, and (2) to prime my metabolism for the carnage ahead. My goal was to break 20 minutes. My current PR was 21 minutes and change, and that was the run leg of my last sprint tri.

While I didn't quite make my goal time, I still managed to set a PR at that distance... and take 2nd in my AG. Not that the field was overly competitive, but hardware is hardware, right? I'm pretty stoked.

Placing in your AG is always great. I finally found the secret to a top 3 place. Yes sometimes it's because of a weak field, but that's fair because I competed against everyone who showed up. I raced the race. But ultimately to get to the podium consistently, do what I did. I got old.

Hey congratulations!!  I've never placed in any race so I'd be pretty happy with a second place.  Good on ya!

Yay! It took me about a year to finally place in my AG. Keep looking for those small races. And someone also suggested foul-weather races which might scare away fair-weather people.
