Subject: Help with a high school science project
Hi, I was wondering if anyone in this community had the time and would be willing to help my daughter gather some data for her high school science project. She is doing an experiment on the effect of visual feedback from heart monitors and cycling computers on your workouts. To do the experiment you will need:
. a bike (I assume we all have one of these)
. a trainer for your bike
. heart monitor
. bike computer
. an audio workout that prompts for levels of effort in terms of perceived exertion and % of heart rate. For example I used the Cardiocoach vol 3, but any 40 minute workout of varying intensity would work.

The experiment involves doing the same workout twice on different days. One using audio prompts, plus the cycling computer, plus the heart monitor. On the second workout cover the cycling computer, don't look at your heart monitor, and just follow the perceived exertion prompts. She is looking to collect the following data from the workout: distance, calories burned, average heart rate (bpm and % of max), avg speed, max speed, max heart rate (bpm and % of max. For example here are two workouts that I did for her:

Workout 1 - Heart rate + computer feedback
Distance - 10.47
Avg HR - 121 - 70%
Calories - 430
avg speed - 15.88
max speed 24.02
max HR - 153 - 89%

Workout 2 - only audio prompts
Distance - 10.39
Avg HR - 116 - 67%
Calories - 403
Avg speed - 15.75
Max speed - 23.92
Max HR - 151 - 88%

Thanks in advance from both my daughter and myself if you have the time this week to do both workouts and post the results back here. I will repeat the experiment for her this week, but she really needs a larger sample than just myself and the couple of workouts I can log between now and Sunday when she needs to pull the data together and build her presentation.
Thanks again!
Doug

Hi Doug,

As a High School teacher, I first want to commend you for taking an active, supportive and engaging role in your daughter’s education. More parents should be like you. Great job!

I will do everything I can to get those workouts in to help your daughter out and I'll report back by this Saturday.

Thenandnow,

I will try to do these workouts for you. Have you thought about what effect the order will have on the results? Should all of your samples do workout 1 followed by workout 2? It would be interesting to note what order they are done in as it may or may not have an impact.

Hi Chevy57, thanks for offering to help. I think the order would make a big difference and if we get enough samples it would be a great angle to look at in the data. I went with workout 1 first and I'm sure that gave me a better feel for what I was suppose to be doing than if if I started with workout 2, so I'd expect a greater difference if workout 2 was done first.

Mike, thanks for your offer of help and the words of encouragement. I think this will be a fun project for my daughter and she seems excited about it and was eager to read some websites that I pointed her to last night on heart rate zones and preceived exertion.

Bumping this up for those that volunteered to help so that it's easier for them to find.

Last call, was anyone able to help with this project? So far all Becca has is three trials of her Dad the human lab rat.

My indoor trainer does not measure distance nor does it measure calories.  I would have to reconfigure it so that the back wheel is the one that is measured rather than the front wheel as it is set up for out door riding.  I am traveling tomorrow through Wed and could get two workouts in on the stationary bike (Monday and Tuesday) and get the info to you by Wed if it is not too late for you.

Thanks for the offer, but she needs to turn the assignment in on Wednesday. She will have to just use my data. Thanks anyway.
