Subject: post knee scope PT - bike vs spinning

Today I had my post knee scope appointment with my Dr, all is going really well.  I am back in the pool and cleared to bike.

As I was leaving I asked more questions like how much biking is ok (duration and effort) for the next few weeks, the nurse said that biking is ok for short periods with little resistance but make sure NOT to ride a spin cycle for 4 more weeks, that would put too much stress on my knee.

Has anyone else ever been warned about spin cycles being harder on the knee vs a good ol' bicycle?  This had me a bit confused but I'm a good patient so I'll do what they say.

IMHO: Neither would be detrimental. Just DON'T put high tension or high resistance n the bike. Same goes for open road riding: No hills!

Keep a high spin w/ low resistance and the seat adjusted properly and either should be fine.

BTW: I'm not a medical professional of any type, but have had a scope and this was the advice given to me at that time.

I know in some spin classes, they make you stand up a lot. Maybe that might put extra pressure on your knee? Or the fact that a spin bike isn't set up to fit you the way your bike should?

I'm dealing with a meniscal tear in my knee and was told that I could bike, but not spin as well.  My doc also said that I should mostly do biking on the trainer with low resistance so that I don't put too much strain on the knee and cause anything to get worse.

Just a thought, your doc may be concerned about both intensity/load on that knee and the fact that there is no freewheel on a spin bike (at least the one's that I've ridden). If you tried to stop subconciously, that could hurt!!

I would avoid spin classes completely if you are going to follow the lead of the instructor with the standing up etc...

Just get on a stationary bike and spin easy.

I agree with grandhaven...I would bet it's the lack of the freewheel.

After my knee surgery I just concentrated on being able to ride my bike on the trainer in the little ring.
