Subject: First Long Course: 70.3 or non-"IRONMAN"?

I am planning on doing one HIM next summer. What are the pluses and minuses of doing an IRONMAN 70.3 vs a HIM sanctioned by USAT or local body?

I know that if I want to qualify for the 70.3  Championship or USAT Championship you have to do it through one of their races. Is it because one is run better than another?

 Any other reason?

The difference is in your head and in what you expect out of the "surroundings" of the event.  Same distance, same amount of training and same effort on race day.

Is a "fist" long course one where everyone gets punched in the swim?

Pick whatever race best serves your needs. Many excellent choices. The race is the same distance either way. For my first HIM I did a smaller race to get my fet wet, so to speak, so I wasn't paying for all the hoopla that I neither wanted or needed.

 LOL (I corrected it)

Actually come to think of it. Are IRONMAN all mass starts vs. starts broken down by AG?

The major difference IMHO is that the Ironman-branded race will cost you up to twice as much as the non-branded one.

Agreed with what the others have said... Pick the one that best suits your schedule for training/race day.  Things I'd be looking at are

Location-- how many days I need to take off to get to the event/hotels
Course set up-- if you live in a flat area, do you want to be doing a race with lots of hills
is it hot, humid, shade/no shade?
swim - ocean, lake, wetsuit, non wetsuit... which are you most comfortable with
cost -- how much do you want to spend??
and of course the race itself... Is it a well run race?? check out some old race reports, or other racing that the same race director does.

No difference other than cost and qualifiers, each is unique.  I've done one NAS HIM and 2 non NAS HIMs.  They were all run well.  There are, however, non NAS races that have reputations for being VERY well run (i.e., Silverman) as well as those that are not very well run (no comment since I heeded advice and would be going on hearsay).  Ask questions and do your research

Actually, to qualify for the USAT championship (Halfmax?) I am not sure you need to do an IM brand.  Rage in the Sage in Vegas, for example, is a Halfmax qualifier.  You can also general entry into Halfmax, as I did.

That said, you will get more props wearing a Silverman HIM shirt than a California 70.3 shirt

Here is a very similar discussion, with the difference being 140.6 or non-Ironman branded race.

we produce 4 Half Irons, 2 that are Ironman 70.3's, and two that aren't. The Hoopla and organization at our races is all the same

Look at what best suits you, and then definitely take a look at race reports....Each race is unique, and all have their merits

 Good discussion. Thanks

I'll let my season schedule dictate. HIM is not much of a stretch for me, but I hope to move onto an IM in 2010 and will build my season around it. At that point I may go for the bling.

Stick close to home and something that is convenient.

I agree with what every one has said.  For my first one, i could care less if it's IM or non-IM.  I'm planning on doing a HIM next year and it will likely be one very close to home and non-branded.  At some point I'll do an actual IM or HIM event just to say I did one, but I don't care either way.  That, and for me, money is a factor until late next year (after graduation!).

I made the point in that thread (I think, anyhow) that at the full iron distance, there's no more difference than what you buy into. There aren't that many independent iron distance races and--as far as I can tell--they all have solid reputations.

I'm not sure that extends to HIMs. There are an awful lot of half irons out there and--judging from multiple race reports--some of them are disasters from an organizational standpoint. My only HIM so far was a "70.3 branded" race. I've been looking for a spring event where I could do a half and my wife an Oly (in case Wildflower didn't work out for us) and found at least one independent race about which pretty much no race reports anywhere on the Web had anything good to say. There's just a lot more choice at the HIM level as far as non-70.3-branded events and it seems worth doing a lot of homework on them. This extends not just to amenities and course difficulty, but even safety.

(Unless you are determined to qualify for Clearwater, in which case your choice would be easier...)

no, both of the Ironman 70.3 events are more $$$. I'm sure you already knew that, though
