I dont know whats wrong with my leg yet, but it hurts inbetween my calf and anknkle. I had this problem last year in september. If the pain is tollerable should i be ok to run on it until i go to the doc (could be a few weeks till i go)?

This is the advice that I'm going to give on your possible injury. I had a pain in my calf and lower leg about a year and half ago. However, I ignored it and kept running on it because when I would go out for my run the pain would go away, thanks to those endorphins. I kept increasing my mileage and doing workouts. However, it soon got to the point where I couldn't handle the pain. I went to the doctor and he determined I had a possible calf muscle tear. That cost me about six weeks of training. So if the pain isn't that bad, I would say keep running on it, but play it smart. Listen to your body. If your body says to stop or decrease your mileage, then do it. Also make sure you are stretching properly after your runs. I hope this helps.

Muscle strains (tears) usually occur right at the point the muscle joins the tendon.  If this is what you have, (not attempting the telepathic diagnosis), be careful with it.  It will seem to take forever to heal, but running on it and reinjuring will build up scar tissue that will make the pain chronic.

I thought it healed last september, but I guess it didnt. An open guess on how long it would take to heal, and what activities I could do while healing would be great.

Is the pain just while you run if it is it could be just your shoes. When I first started running my achilles tendon area was real painful i got some inserts and the pain went away

Hey again Silent,

The usual medical advice says 2 weeks for a mild strain (grade I),  6 to 8 weeks for moderate strain (grade II).  A complete rupture (grade III) usually requires surgery and takes several months, if ever, to return to normal activity.   Age makes a difference too.  Being an old codger, I have taken longer to see improvement than the stock medical advice.  If you can still run on it and there is no bruise showing, you are probably in the grade I category.   I would advise RICE, ( rest, ice, compression, and elevation).  Start mobility (i.e. walking for exercise) and stretching when the pain goes away.  When you are pain free and feeling normal again, cut the running to about half the distance you were running previously and reduce the intensity  (you run pretty fast).  Build back up slowly.  You should avoid hills and speed work until you are sure the symptoms are completely gone.  You should be able to recover completely from a mild strain with no after effects.  Just don't turn it into a chronic injury with irrational exuberance.
