Is once a week enough to benefit from doing a yoga class? I'd like to give yoga a try but it's hard to find time for it between work, training, rock climbing, and the odd social outting.

What benefits are you loking for from yoga?

Just guessing, I'd have to give you a resounding maybe. Yoga once a week is certainly better than no yoga -at least in my little world But you aren't going to see huge gains in flexibility, strength, or equanimity with just one practice a week. Flexibility in particular seems to improve more with just a smidge of work frequently, as opposed to with one 90-minute yoga class a week.

On the other hand, this is reality and there are only so many minutes in the day. If yoga once a week is what you can do, then do THAT. Let us know how it's going!

I started off on once a week and got hooked. During the off season I do it 4-5 times per week. Its great for flexibility, and I've found that I am less prone to injury. With yoga you are stretching, but also strengthening a lot of the little muscles that keep the bones in place. Oh you know in the ankle, the knee, shoulders. Fun stuff like that.

I say try it.

If you want to "give yoga a try" then once a week should work for you. That's what I've been doing for a couple of months now. It will be enough for you to see what yoga is about and to start to see what you might get from it. You may find oppertunities for improvement that you hadn't expected. Then you can make an informed decision about how much you want to practice. I think that experience and new understanding was a pretty good benefit for me.

Even if you only have time to go to yoga once a week, you will be able to take home what you learn everyday. There are alot of poses that I do throughout the day to stretch when I have time, or if I don't have time to run to the gym for strength training, I use them at home. Sometimes I will only do it for 5 minutes when I get up, or two minutes before I go to bed. It's a great way to relax...and you can do it anywhere...like waiting in the grocer's line...okay, maybe not anywhere, but a lot of places. Learn a bit and apply when you can! Have fun!
