what are you wearing on your head, and do all those air vents really make a difference?  is it worth it to spend an extra 40 bucks for a few more holes?

Dear Lidless,

I have a ~$35 helmet and my head has not yet caught fire from the heat. And if it did, I think extra holes would just fan the flames anyhow. Go cheap.

If you have the money to burn.. thats up to you .. but as a friend of mine says..

You only use your helmet once. (not in a morbid sense of course) but If you ever do use it, you have to toss it.

I splurged on the Giro Pneumo in 2003 for RAGBRAI. My old $35 helmet would have me sweating so profusely I could hardly see, and I was biking in Wisconsin. There was no way I was going to take a week of pedaling through the Iowa humidity with that old sweat bucket!

It does make a difference. The extra vents do help to keep my head cool.

When I did RAGBRAI, I also shaved my head before the start, to help with heat dissipation. The suntan pattern on my head was incredible!

I care more about comfort, weight, and size than than the number of holes, but that being said the number of holes and extra cost is probably more about weight than ventilation.

In the end if it feels good and has some ventilation then I wouldn't worry.

But you might want to check it's impact rating compared to the cheaper helmet.

I really like having the extra ventilation. That said, I usually buy higher end helmets that are a couple of seasons old for the same price as cheapo current season models. Check out the big online cycling retailers and also Sierratradingpost.com. I can usually find what I need.

My helmet is comfortable, and well-ventilated, though that's not why I wear this particular model:

You're really lidless? Oh, please get SOMETHING! Choose whatever style you like, go cheap, go expensive, but protect your brain.

I'm a small person, so I get children's helmets. My current choice has Mary Engelbreit cherries on it. Now admittedly, this is not what most people here would choose, but this is probably not your first clue that I'm slightly weird.

Trixie,
You're an old vet, you know BTers (especially me) are cheap whenever possible so that we can splurge on something we think is REALLY cool. Then we come here to post our rationalization for why we HAD to have it. LOL
I did just splurge on fancy helmet, and my last one was like $25 on sale. Never had any complaints about the old one, but I like how light the new one is. I don't even know it's there and the sweat isn't rolling down my face so fast. BTW - my rationalization for the expensive new lid was this - it went with my expensive new tri bike!
My new brain bucket was on sale at TriSports, like the other post, it was last year's model.
Maybe you should buy a new bike first, then get the helmet to match. ?
Have fun

Bear, purple is your color.

Hawkeye, that's the one I was looking at, and if you say it's cool, I gotta get it

andrea, a kids helmet would be AWESOME especially with fun stuff on it.

Alpine87- just bought a new bike, and the old helmet first of all doesn't match and second, is so old it's not race legal, CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT, that makes me feel sooo old.  Thanks for the help people, i knew you'd be there for me

Yeah, I have to do something about that avatar. It's disturbing to see my own backside whenever I log on. I hadn't thought that part through when I loaded the picture. Sigh....

But, you have to shave your head and ride 500 miles in a week to get the great tan lines on your scalp!

Seriously, a friend of mine (who lives in St. Joseph, MI, BTW) loaned me his and his comment was, "Just look at it! It's more not-helmet than helmet!" After one ride, I was sold.

Note to everyone: PLEASE wear a helmet. Several years ago, I witnessed a very young, bicycle riding child get hit by an SUV. His shoes flew through the air, but his helmet stayed on and saved his life (he is OK and has given "wear your helmet" presentations at schools). I have a cheapo ($15 or so) helmet. It doesn't have a lot of ventilation, but it meets safety requirements and may save my life.

Just to clarify:

I was being facetious...

a lady died on the lakefront because she wasn't wearing a helmet but was only going about 8mph when she hit a runner who popped out in front of her, lost her balance, and hit her head HARD as she fell off her bike.

cause of death?  head trauma.

a helmet would have saved her life!

Just a few short years ago riding MTB on a gentle trail with my daughter we were traversing a footbridge over a small ravine, or dry riverbed-thingy, with the bridge being about 8 feet above ground, and trying to show off in front of my daughter, I guess (can't think of any other reason for my next move) I decided to bunny hop over the side of the bridge. Being on a long travel full suspension bike, I thought I could just take the drop without any problem while we were cruising along at an easy 5 mph when I caught my rear wheel on the side of the bridge, causing me to catapult over the handlebars and landed squarely on the top of my head. It didn't help that the rear suspension, I think, compressed during my take-off and gave additional power that really threw me hard. In retrospect, I'd wished someone was filming it; I'd really like to see how much air and hang time I actually got!

I was unconscious for a few minutes, waking to my daughter's screams in her panicked state. I was able to get up and managed to make it home, thankfully living only a short distance away, but I suffered a severe compression injury to my cervical spine and a kick-ass case of whiplash. Two years of physio and chiropractic later, I still have chronic neck pain (minor enough so as not to slow me down, but I have quite a bit of arthritic changes there).

The point of my story: I never rode with a helmet. Ever. Except that day, setting out frome home with my daughter, I made her put her helmet on and she insisted that if she had to wear her helmet, so should I, so I dusted my lid off and put it on, figuring it was good to set an example.

If I hadn't been wearing that helmet, I've been told I easily could have suffered enough brain trauma to have killed me, or at least severely debilitated me.

The helmet? The rigid shell was splintered and the foam compressed pretty severely. Better my helmet than my melon.

WEAR YOUR HELMET ON EVERY RIDE!

You know what they say, a $10 helmet for a $10 head..... Not that more money is better but it is reasonable to spend some money in a good helmet if you are commiting to this sport.
I used to wear a Trek Lunar. Basic helmet circa 1997 It fit me ok, nice mushroom design and 12 little holes to keep my head cool. Adjustment? A little foam things inside the helmet. After some research, I managed to buy a brand new Giro Monza 2004 for $47, what a bargain retail $99! Not a helmet the caliber of the Atmos model (for Pros) but let me tell you, what a difference!
What did I get for my money? A much better fit, 3 adjustment points (not only the simple cord below my chin) and 24 nice open holes to keep my head cool on the blisterig florida weather. Was it worth it? You bet! I really like my helmet.
Do your research, you can still find last years models on the internet cheaper.

Trizzle...it's about 1) the feel (gotta fit), 2) the ventilation (more holes IS better), and finally, 3) the looks. Last year's models are perfect.

I wear a holy Bell helment which replaced a not so holy bell helmet.  What a difference.  Go holy.

How much money do you spend on your shoes? Now whats more important, feet or head? OK, my answer is both, please get a good quality helmet. Protect your gray matter.

Here's a nice helmet for you, its even got the fancy air foil...it might be a little too retro for someone of your taste.

Yep, go get a lid.
One saved my melon, after catapulting over a car at 45kph. smashed in the side of the lid, and only got a mild concussion (doctor said it could have been worse..... a lot worse). and no side effects, unless you ask my wife. and no side effects, unless you ask my wife. and no side........

after the accident, i sent the helmet back to bell, with a description of the accident (police reports, photos, etc) and they replaced it at cost.

remember, cooler heads prevail!

Personally, I splurged for the $125 helmet because it was SOOOOO comfortable. (in the past) I have ridden without a helmet on city streets because I just couldn't get my old, inexpensive Giro adjusted right. If it fits right, I look forward to wearing it, so spend as much money as it takes. You'll easily cover the cost of the most expensive "pro" helmet if you save yourself 1 ambulance ride.

I'm with AdventureBear on this one. Been working ER for many years and flying trauma patients for several more years. I wear a helmet biking, skiing, and playing hockey. Wouldn't even dream of doing any of those sports without one. I can take up the rest of your week plus the weekend telling stories about people who haven't worn a helmet. Let me just put it this way...most of the lucky ones are the ones who died right away...the unlucky ones are still vegetating in a bed somewhere. Blunt but true. PLEASE wear your helmets...we's hate to lose one of you cool BT-ers!!!
