Subject: Feet falling asleep on the bike!

I noticed this on a pretty short 15 mile or so ride that was an easy ride....basically all my toes and the front half of my feet fell completely asleep - and stayed that way for the whole ride.  I was doing a 3 mie run after the ride so they came back to normal after about 5-6 minutes off the bike so I really did not think anything about it.  The next ride - about 30 minutes into the ride I felt it happening again.....it is a somewhat uncomfortable feeling as it does not seem to be going away when I am riding.  I even did an hour on a recumbant bike at the gym after a weight training workout and it happened again.  I have been off the bike for a while (4-5 months) so I am hoping it is just my body adjusting to the leg workout.  I did a few tri's last summer and a number of bike workouts and do not remember this happening.   Anyone else experience this?

Your cleat position may be wrong or the sole of the shoe may be incorrect for your foot type.

Maybe your shoes are too tight?

with the cold weather, you didn't wear heavier socks than usual. that can cause your shoes to fit too tightly and your feet will fall asleep. I actually had this issue once with a new pair of riding tights I had purchased that had a tight elastic strap around the ankle. The elastic ankle actual caused enough restriction in blood flow to my feet that my toes started to fall asleep. Just a couple observations from my brain???

Any of the previous posts may be the issue. The fit of the shoes or the cleats can put pressure on the nerve next to the ball of your foot. Cold weather can cause it but you said it happened at the gym too. If it is pressure on the nerve, more time on the bike won't make it better. Overly tight muscles in your back and hips can affect that too.

Are you using bike shoes or running shoes?

+1 on the cold weather. I didn't think that meet feet felt particularly cold, but I too noticed they were going numb after about 45 minutes of riding. I finally got booties (after a chilly ride), and I was surprised to see that my foot numbness went away. I'd give booties a try first.

Thanks for the responses.  I have the LG Tri Air 2 shoes and like them.  In the gym I was just in running shows on the recumbant bike.  It was a little chilly out when I rode.  I may also adjust the cleat position to see if that helps.  I will also try to wear a little warmer sock and see how that works.

I have my first HIM in April in New Orleans.  If I were going to invest in really, really good tri shoes, and am not really worried about transistion times on this race, what shoes would you guys recommend?  I chose the LG's because they have the one strap and I don't wear socks in the sprints so I can fly thru the transistions.  I have two HIM's this year and will be doing a bunch of long rides and really want to have shoes that feel good.  3 hours on my hard a** seat is enough to worry about.....really don't want to worry about my feet-

Thanks again -

Brian

What kind of pedals are you using? I have noticed some people continue to use SPD pedals on road bikes. Its too small of a platform and will definitely contribute to this.

Too small

Otherwise, the other suggesstions are good.

Bike fit, cleat position, bad fitting shoes, all can contribute. My toes can fall asleep but only after a 4-5 hours into a ride when it is hot a I suspect my feet swell. I have inserts in my shoes that keep my metatarsals from being squished. Having it happen within 15 miles to me signals it is a pretty major issue that needs resolving.

If it persists much longer I would look at moving your cleats close to your mid-foot.

Similar thing happened to me when I first started riding.

You may want to pay attention to how tight you "latch" them down. It turned out my shoes were too tight and the problem went away as soon as I gave my feet a little more room.

My left foot does the same thing.  I just try and move my toes on every stroke for a few minutes and that at least gets it tolerable.  I've also broken my left foot (motocross) and severly sprained it numerous times (basketball) so I'm pretty sure that's contributed to the poor circulation.

Same here.  Keep in mind you feet swell as you ride.  I make it habit to loosen and re tighten my shoes at the turnaround point of our rides.

Any chance my saddle may be the culprit?  I have put  agood amount of miles in these shoes and have not really experienced the numbness before.  I have, however, recently changed my saddle to the Adamo Road this past summer, but due to a** surgery (literally) I was not able to put a bunch of miles on it.  I have stuck with it, even though it is pretty uncomfortable.  I was reading through some threads on here, and another person said he had experienced pain and numbness with his Adamo Road saddle and had to switch to the Specialized Troupe.  I may try to switch back to the saddle that came with the bike - Selle San Marco and see how that works.  I have a big arse......maybe I just need a more comfortable saddle.

Yes, it could be your saddle. I've experienced this.

Could be the actual thickness of the saddle is different. Did you adjust the seat height when putting new saddle on?  The way I measure is top of the middle of my saddle to center of my crank. I switched saddles last year and had to adjust my seat height..just throwing it out there.
