This is the idea behind the LightLane. Our system projects a crisply defined virtual bike lane onto pavement, using a laser, providing the driver with a familiar boundary to avoid. With a wider margin of safety, bikers will regain their confidence to ride at night, making the bike a more viable commuting alternative.

Reading through the comments on the blog is really interesting, both people bringing up good points and possible negative points the developers hadn't thought of.

My major takeaway from those, though, is that safe cycling in the U.S. really depends on a cultural attitude shift--and unfortunately, that's much harder to effect than developing "safety" features.

Is it just me, or is the cyclist in that picture not wearing a helmet?  Me thinks if one wants to improve one's safety on the bike, you might start with a helmet, no?

Good catch!

I'd be worried that the headlights would drown out the markers on the road or that the driver would get confused about how the road is marked.

Cool concept, but watch the video, at 2:15 he blows a red light turning left, doofus.  Not the best marketing for a "safety" product.

It looks  like he's making a left turn onto a one-way, which he could do on red... but not from the right side of the lane!  Dumb.  I also think he is woefully underlit, even with the Light Lane (which I think is rad).  But he should have a helmet light among others.

I think the dude in the ad is wearing a cap of some sort.  Not a helmet.  Seems to me like helmets are not "in" this year.  I see more and more bare heads on the trails this year than ever.

They need to invent a rear light that looks like deer eyes.. then drivers would swerve and hit the brakes ..

I can't see the video...but often when I am riding I wonderer why someone couldn't come up with a lser-type product that visually shows drivers where "three feet" is.  Even BETTER if said product would snap a picture of their license plate if they encroach upon the three feet...wouldn't that be awesome???  I really think that more drivers would move over if they knew the biker had a concrete way to prove that a car got too close to them.

This seems like a step in that direction.

Too bad the camera filming him is following behind (probably in a car). It would be more interesting to see a rear mounted camera view to see how effective it is at keeping vehicles at distance.

Another note, the cyclist desperately needs reflective clothing and a flashing red rear light.
