Subject: Feeling kinda sick: what now?

I'm feeling borderline sick today and was trying to decide what to do.  Rest up and get better?  That's probably wise.  Or try to get in a little bit of training, but not so much as to wear me down?  That's tempting too.

What do you all do?

The reality for me -- with 2 small kids under 4 -- is that I feel like I'm getting sick, am actually sick, or am recovering from being sick, about half of my life.  Before kids, I'd get sick maybe once a year.  Now, it way more often (and has been since before I started training for tri's so I don't see a correlation there).

Most of the times I've decided to do something, I've ended up feeling better, and haven't gotten more sick- though who knows how much of that is luck.  Of course, I know that the obvious answer is to not risk it and get well, but I'm concerned I'll miss too much time and was curious how others approached this.  Thanks,

If it's in the head (stuffy, headach, etc) I try to train (maybe take it a little easier).

If it's in the chest, (cough, nausea, etc) I rest.

In both cases, I up the sleep and fluids big time.

Listen to your body.  If you feel up to it, do it.  If not, rest.  I think you can tell the difference.

hey bro,

father of 3 here (5, 2, and 1).

get some rest. trust me, trying to train/workout through a sickness will make it worst. the kiddos require a lot more energy than you realize. i wish i had their endurance for some of my races...

a month or two back, i tried to "sweat out" a bug and the bug bi0th slapped me back.

get some rest. you can train when you feel better, imo.

Depends on how 'kinda sick' you're feeling ... if you are feeling kind of crappy, maybe a light, easy swim?

I'm with you there. I only have one kid, I'm hoping that the immunity I gain from her helps with the next one, but I've had maybe 4 weeks total since Labor day when I wasn't getting sick, sick or getting over being sick.

When I am sick, I tend to lay low. If it's in the head, I'll do easy work outs while getting sick and getting over it. If it's in the chest I tend to just wait it out.

I follow the rule that if it's above the neck I'll continue working out.  If it's below the neck I rest.  I don't mess around with anything  in my lungs - but I'm prone to sinus colds and I can work out through those.

In general I think you're better off resting and beating it before it gets really bad ... as opposed to having a crappy workout and then feeling really miserable.

Thanks for all the advice.  I particularly like the above/below the neck idea- that makes sense to me.  I wish this kind of call was simple- but the devil is in the details and exactly how one feels at a given point in time.  My gut tells me to take it easy, so that's what I'll do.  Today, at least....

I rest when I am feeling run down or borderline getting sick.  I rest when I am sick.  Where and how I feel sick really doesn't play into it for me.

You certainly have my sympathy.  It's tough with small kids, been there, done that, not easy.  Once they've been in school a couple years and built up immunity, it will get much better, back to your sick once a year routine.  Probably seems like an eternity to you at this point, but trust me on this -- the cliche is right -- it goes by fast.  Frankly, I think that it's an accomplishment with young children around to merely maintain some level of fitness and not add tons of weight, and then hopefully you have the opportunity to do more in another couple years.  My worst physical condition occurred when my kids were young.  Hang in there.  The kids are more and more fun as they get older.  Usually.

Same deal for me today. Woke up feeling borderline sick, headache, body ache, generally tired. Got home from work and said "rest day". Will watch biggest loser tonight while on the couch instead of the trainer.

happy training

I had aches and chills and a minor GI issue the last 2 days.  Take the rest - your body will thank you.

Like lots of other posters say, trust your instinct.  I am fighting a head cold today so I did an easy swim for 30 min in the salt water pool and then took a steam.  I am feeling better already.  I also did a circuit training DVD but didn't push 100%, just got my blood flowing.  I also have two little boys, so totally understand the sick cycles!!  Most important: water, rest, and whatever your "secret cure" is...whether chicken soup, neti pot, or other folk remedies.  Mind over matter.  Take care!

I generally err on the side of rest, but I suppose it depends on how sick you feel. If you just have some minor sniffles and are tired if might be okay if you'll be able to get adequate rest otherwise. If you're definitely coming down with something I say rest. Every time I've tried to workout when I clearly was fighting off a cold, I've ended up more sick and I'm usually sick for longer.

I think you're right.  I'm sure it will get better as they get older.  And it has gone fast, even this far.  As it is, though, we've been blessed with number 3 arriving in July, so my time "in the fog" gets extended by a little bit.  And, I can relate, part of the reason I got into this was when I found myself at my worst physically condition, well, ever, about 6 months ago.  That was 30 pounds ago, and I'm full of energy and goals.  But, I feel like I've got to get a lot in before July when my season, for wonderful family reasons, will likely end for the year.
