Anybody done it?  Do they allow flip turns?

I have done it 3 times, this year will be #4. Yes they allow flip turns, and you can even flip and go into the next lane to save more time. Great race, probably most popular one in the SCTS series. Pool is very hot (mid 80's) and air temp can vary from cool to gorgeous. If you are a slow swimmer, you will be getting out of the water and going outside after mid-morning and it should be fine, but if you are a strong swimmer it can be a shocker as you exit. All of setup event races are awesome so if you have ever done one you know what to expect, if you haven't done one its A++.

Was the swim a 500 last year too?  I was looking over the times from last year and they seem rather slow (assuming it was 500 meters)...  Is it just a slow swim or was it longer last year?  I did a 500 time trial so that I could seed myself and swam 8:26.  That would have put me fairly far up in the field and I'm by no means a good swimmer.

Disclaimer:  I've never done a tri with a pool swim.

Regardless, I should be there next month!  Looking forward to it!  Been in tri-withdrawls.

I could be wrong, but it may be a yard pool and not meters. I know it isn't too much of a difference, but 500 yards is a little bit longer than 500 meters.

The swim is meters as opposed to yards which makes it a bit longer. 500 meters is almost an extra 50 yards when comparing you your 500 yard time. Also, you must exit the pool exit the building, run down a small ramp, and cross a street before hitting the timing mat that will count as the end of your swim.

It is strange, but if you are doing the swim, make sure you put your 100 YARD time and not your 500 meter or yard time or you will be in the back of the pack. Also, I hate to further reinforce this practice, but when entering your time, remember that a lot of people believe they are much faster than they are. The first two times I did this race I put my real time down and was way way further back then I should have been, passing 10-15 people in the water. Last year I embellished a bit and still passed about 10 people (this is with 10 seconds between swimmers). It's a terrible practice, but just a warning.

Hope this all helps and if you haven't signed up it looks like it will fill up tomorrow!

Perfect, thanks.  I signed up on Saturday.  Although I did put down my "true" hundred yard time.  Hope things turn out ok.

Well, actually it's the other way around.  (1 meter = 1.09 yards).Smile

You can change your time (online) up through the end of February, I believe.

I'm a really weak swimmer (anything under 9min would be good for me...), but improving daily, so my plan is to do a 500m time trial towards the end of Feb and use that time (converted to time/100yd).  Not sure whether I'll 'embellish' or not -- I can see both sides, but I really hate the idea of contributing to 'grade inflation'. On the other hand, I hate the idea of having to pass people in the pool.....  Ugh.

The pool is definitely meters...

The timing mat has been in previsous years either right outside the door when you exit the pool, or at the entrance to transition. That, in part, accounts for the slower swim times. Mainly, though, it's due to the super-hot pool.

I'll be there for th e4th year in a row, hoping to get down near the 1 hour mark. FWIW...I just checked and for the first time (I think), it's sold out.

Better make your reservations at the Days Inn quick before it sells out.

Does anyone know how to change the swim time for this race?  I went to the website and it said we could change our predicted swim up until the 28th.  It says we can do this through the registration site.  There isn't a link for registration because it's full so I'm a little confused.  Has anyone else changed their swim time and can tell me exactly what I need to do?  I can always email the race director but figured I'd ask here first.

TO change your swim time, log in to the site here. Find the event you want to change your time for in your list of registered events. Click "edit registration" for that event. Change your time in the appropriate field, and click submit.

Thanks Jim!

I seem to be having some difficulties with all of this.  When I log in it says I'm not registered for any events.  But I am registered and on the PI participant's list.  Not sure what the deal is- I'm thinking there's something wrong with my account.  My account name was under my maiden name, so I went in there to update my last name- thinking the event would show up once the last name's matched.  But no luck.  I'll have to email the race director- or say screw it and just stay where I'm seeded.

You didn't get in off of the wait list did you? Do you remember logging in when you registered?

Something does sound fishy...

I registered both Jon and I when registration opened.  What's funny is that he just registered for the Columbia tri, and that's the only event showing up in his registration acccount.  It was awhile back- I'm wondering if I regsitered under a new account or something and forget the new one?  I dunno...

Everyone see the new bike and run courses? The bike looks like it might be shorter so there should be some fast times! Also it eliminated the biking through the real open area of the island where there was often a lot of cross wind so this should be better for those on discs, although I think this was the most beautiful part of the bike.

All in all, I think the changes are for the better, no more worrying about being hit by cyclists during the finishing sprint!

I'm glad they changed the bike course- I never liked that open section that was usually windy.  At least they're not going to make us get off our bikes and run them through the grass and then back onto the road to avoid the construction- we had to that in 2006, which I thought was crazy!

Does anyone know when they'll post our swim start times?

They usually put the swim times up a week before.

I called the Days Inn to make a reservation and the guy I talked to told me that if I wanted late check out I would be charged a fee for it.  In the past I remember them letting us have late check out (w/no extra charge) because of the race.  Was anyone able to get late check out without getting charged?  There is absolutely no way with the staggered swim start times that I will be done in time to check out.

I've never gotten a late checkout. I always just check out in the morning, and shower at the pool after the race.

I didn't realize they had showers at the pool.  Cool- I guess I can do that.

Yeah- I heard that rumor too!

BTW- I am staying at the Holiday Inn and I have late check out.  So....I have all day to finish the race being that I don't have to check out until 2pm

What's everyone doing for dinner Fri?  Does anyone want to get together?

Swim times are up.  I'm the last person to go before a minute break.    At least I won't get passed!  But I have a feeling I'm going to catch up to some people who seeded themselves poorly.
