Gordo - thanks but amazon won't let me cancel my order.  I paid them already and they say they will ship it "soon".  It is very cool that you wrote the book.  Sorry I didn't know before.  I am just clueless about this sport in general! That's why I need to read your book!

JorgeM - 2009-01-30 7:52 AM I hope the new editions are to correct all the misinformation included on the 1st editions...

 Jorge,

I'd be interested in what misinformation you are refering to. I've just bought the original Going Long, but haven't had a chance to read it yet!

Thanks

Gordo - Ironically, I got an email from Amazon that they shipped the book to me today!

Jorge - I will buy your book when you have one published!   (or maybe you already do and I am clueless...like with Gordo's book)

I have both of these books, not the version coming out.  They are both worth having and have somewhat different focus.  Personally, I like Gordo's Going Long the most.  Gordo's doesn't go into the nitty gritty about building a plan as much but it goes into the actual training much more.

 All,

 Please send me details on any mistakes/concerns you find/have.  Joe and I will consider all of them for future editions.  You can use the contact form (bottom right) from the link in my sig file)

 Sorry for the very late response, I sometimes missed emails of some of the threads I posted

I read GL a long time ago so I can't think of any right now of the top of my head but I'll post some later. For the TTB that one I know better because it is constantly use as reference by athletes and coaches; some of the incorrect concepts discussed and more commonly debated by sports physiologists are:

·          AeT – this is a coined term not used in sports physiology

·          Muscular endurance –another coined term

·          Critical Power – the use of this concept which is a model developed by Monod and Scherrer on the book is completely incorrect; the model uses data points to estimate the power/duration relation and predict power output at different durations.

Hi Gordo,

Not to sound like a star-struck fan here, but do you actually handle the copies of your book? If so, would you sign mine?

Please?

I sign all the copies that I send out -- send me an email and I'll shoot your an order form -- happy to help.

Clarification on terms:

AeT - highest possible effort without material up tick in baseline lactate (not mentioned much in GL but used extensively in my coaching) -- essential point to determine appropriate steady effort.

ME - Joe's term -- pretty clear what is meant and well known in sports science circles -- often called LT, or aerobic threshold or, even, anaerobic threshold -- what we are training is highest recruitment of intermediate fibers without material recruitment of fast twitch fibers and associated fuel/lactate spike.  Essential intensity point for all distances of triathlon -- see this article on XTri for more info --

http://xtri.com/coaches_display.aspx?riIDReport=5551&CAT=48&xref=xx

CP - critical power - basically best average - Joe's not defining the same as cited reference - PeaksWare/CyclingPeaks worked out their differences.

Happy to clarify any other terms that confuse the experienced coaches/athletes on the board.  Your feedback helps us produce a better product!

Great article, Gordo.  Explains a lot of the terminology out there.  Thanks.

In a nutshell:

AeT = LT1

ME = LT2

??

Been a while since I've read GL or TTB, but this has always been my understanding.

Check the chart in the XTri article -- the 'majority' (and it's not clear, yet) appear to have settled on terminology along these lines...

http://www.endurancecorner.com/library/endurance_training_essentials/training_zones

VT1 = LT
VT2 = FT

We've adopted the lingo that appears to be consistent with the widest number of exercise physiologists as well as the cycling/running community.  Some of the confusion happened (a decade ago) because Joe's presentation became 'standard' (ahppens when you sell 175K copies of TTB) and was different from the cycling and sports science community.  With the merger of CyclingPeaks/TrainingBible (now TrainingPeaks), Joe adjusted his terminology and the later book editions moved into greater harmony.

^^^ that's a good start for the new editions. What about other terms like I mentioned above; were those also corrected?
