Probably a little on the early side to be thinking about getting out for open water swim practice, especially given the weather this past week, but with that said does anyone have any recommendations for tri clubs or other groups that have regular open water swim practices in the DFW area?

thanks

DA/DSU does a Friday morning swim out at Lake Grapevine starting sometime after daylight savings kicks in.

A buddy and I started doing open water swims at Lake Ray Hubbard last summer in a nice cove.  I was doing it at least once or twice a week.  I'm sure will be doing the same thing this summer.

Do you have an idea when and what is the cost? Looked on the Playtri site, but didn't see any info...

Check out this calendar: http://tricommunity.net/ . Beginning in March, we will have a supported open water swim every weekend.  Can't beat that.  The Tri Community is a collaboration between three tri clubs - Gorilla Multisport, Texas Triple Threat and Negative Split Racing.  Join any one of the clubs then you can attend any of the workouts put one by the 3 tri clubs.

Hey Tommy,  Do you have any more info on the tri group.  All I could navigate to was the calendar

Marcy, the only info that exists at the moment is the group workout calendar.  I went to the kick off meeting for the Tri Community.  The basic concept is this:

1. Each of the clubs has their own specialty; Texas Triple Threat has great swimming programs (Kristen Coddish); Negative Split has great bike and run workouts (Gerald); Gorrilla puts on great events - clinics, supported bike rides, camps, etc.  By combining their efforts these groups can offer more group workouts to their memebership.  Why be everything to everyone?  The individual tri clubs keep their own identity but share group workouts.

2.  The coaches for each of the clubs will be attending various races.  So, you can have support from the coaches and club while at your particular race.  For example, I'm a member of Texas Triple Threat and I'm doing the NO 70.3.  The Gorillas will be at NO 70.3, so I'll probably go hang out with them.

3.  If I remember correctly, the fee based services will be the same as if you were a member of that particular club.  For example, I'm TTT, but if I want to attend a Gorilla clinic, I pay the same as a Gorilla member (vs the non-member fee).

Tommy,
This sounds like a good plan on there part. But what is the purpose? Why are they trying to keep all the clubs separate yet not? Why not just all combine into one super-club with one unified name and a lot of good coaches with a lot of good workouts and a lot of good members. Wouldn't this help build the club even faster and bigger? Just seems odd to try and keep the clubs separate when they really aren't at all, a bit confusing to any new person looking to join a local club.

Thanks for getting back with the information. I'll see what my lousy schedule will allow me to do. I'll fit a couple in somehow. Thanks

I think the main reason is these are businesses first, tri clubs second.  The coaching, etc. that they provide is their livelihood and I'm sure they don't want to give that up.

Is anyone planning on doing any open water swimming on their own anytime soon.  I am racing Lonestar Half the first weekend of April, and I would like to get back into open water a few times before that weekend.  Also, I have a new wetsuit that I need to break in.  If anyone wants to brave the cold, let me know.  I live in fort worth, but can meet pretty much anywhere in the metroplex.  PM me if you want to swim.
