Subject: 1st "long run" in 15 years today It was beautiful and sunny today, so I decided to do my long run outside. It was 20 degrees, but it felt fairly nice until the end. Some lessons learned: 1. Hats will freeze because of sweat. (edges over ears were frozen) 2. When you plan to run for an hour for your long run, and you average 9:15 miles on "normal runs," don't pick a 8.5 mile loop route. 3. Walking sounds great until the wind-chill picks up. It then doesn't matter how sore your legs are - warmth is more important. 4. Hills are murder on the long run. I had a total of 1004 feet of climbing. It doesn't seem like much in a car, but I got a new perspective today. 5. All of you helped while I was out there. The urge to push was tempered by everyone here always talking about staying within limits to avoid injury. Also, I was buoyed by the fact many of you run a lot faster and longer, so I knew my mind is what is holding me back the most. Just HTFU, right? 6. I can't wait until next week's long run!! |
