Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4AM, breakfast included water, coffee, bagel and PB, and a banana, I was also trying to remember to bring everything I needed for the race
Event warmup:

Not much, I figured I'd use the first few miles to ease into the race
Run
  • 5h 38m
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

Started easy and had some good splits for the first five or six miles, had a friend run with me for the first 13 miles, so that helped alot. There was also a marathon relay, so at the midpoint of the race I really wanted to be done, but I kept going :) Started to tire a bit around mile 18 to 20. I just kept plodding along; mile 25 was my hardest and slowest mile.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I started out pretty much at my goal pace, I droppped off at the end, but I did my first marathon :) My goal time was 5:30 to 5:45, so I was right there
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around on very tired legs. Had water, bagel and beer :) Watched a few more friends finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm just a slow runner :)

Event comments:

I'm already thinking about the Marine COrps Marathon in the fall :)

Outstanding!  What a great accomplishment.  And you are hooked...if you're thinking about the *next* one on the same day you finished your first one, you're officially a member of the 'I drank the Kool-Aid' club.

Enjoy MCM....

Congratulations on your first Marathon. I am still working on one. Don't fret on being a "slow" runner. Concentrate on being a GREAT runner.

I have a saying-slow and steady wins the race, unless you are a kenyan. I did a 10K Saturday, I finished, but the Kenyans could have ran it twice before I finished. But in my eyes and in my mind and in my heart. I won it for me.

Congratulations again, perhaps I will see you at the MC Marathon. :>)

I remember the feeling of finishing my first marathon.... It was incredible..  I retired my shoes and framed my bib number...
Congratulations.... you are now a marathoner...
There are about 600,000 people that run marathons in the US... it seems like a lot... but it is only 0.0024% of the US populations... No many....

keep on running it is good for the soul

Congratulations Sue! Huge achievement.

Just a quick question - you did the Shamrock Marathon, you posted an Irish flag on your race report - are you Irish?

Way to go Sue!   It is truly an awesome feat to actually complete your first Marathon within your goal.  Sounds like you had a wonderful first experience since you are already talking about #2.  When the Marathon gets to be 'old hat' you can take up Ultra's and find out what the love of running can do to a person.  : )

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations on your first marathon! I think it's interesting that you're already thinking about your next one. Must mean you're a masochist, or you're hooked -- either way, it must mean that your first was a good experience. Good job pushing yourself even when you wanted to quit. A lot of it is mental, not just physical, and you excelled in both!

Mike
