Comments:

Highlight of race was at mile 4 - where I was 35 seconds up on my 7 minute mile schedule. After that it started to hurt, and runners kept coming past me, rather than me overtaking them. I hung in until mile 8 when the pace really started to hurt and I slowed. Trevor caught me at mile 9, and I picked up the pace to stay with him - but boy did that hurt - I had lost him again 2 miles later, and despite a dig up the hill I couldn't close the gap. Last three miles were all about survival as the pain went to another level...
What would you do differently?:

Run shorter races!

Thus is a half marathon PB fro me though - which feels pretty good.

Heart rate shows I couldn't really have pushed any harder!

The distance - think I need to stick to the shorter stuff.

Well done Andy. Fantastic time.
Your heart rate to split times make fascinating reading. You must have been up at your max at the end.

OK - I've looked back, and this wasn't a PB for me after all :-(

Looking back at old results, I've done this race twice before, in 1998 I managed 1.36.42, on what must have been my second ever half marathon, but in 1999 I clocked 1.31.35.

I don't think I've done much distance running over the last three or four years, and I think that showed yesterday! I just don't get the time to train these days...

The encouraging thing yesterday was that I found that I can push myself right at the limit of my lactate threshold for a long time - although it is hurting today (understatement).

My max (as I found out at one of John's wednesday night hill rep sessions) is 206bpm when running, and my min is 37bpm (as I found out when recovering from surgery recently...). Which means that I ran the race yesterday at an average of 87% of max.

So I have now _definately_ decided to stick to Sprint distance race this year - which means Ersking on 8th May, then Midlothian on 29th May as my first two targets.

Think I should try and get some bike miles in now.

What races are you planning next Dave?

The results have been posted at http://www.clacksweb.org.uk/site/documents/sport/alloahalfmarathon2...

My next races are going to be the Stirling Aquathon and then the Stirling Triathlon, I don't get about much. I'm very tempted to enter the Firth of Forth triathlon, swimming under the Forth railway bridge seems strangely appealing. I'll need to see about getting/hiring/borrowing a wet suit, but it's not till August.
