Subject: terry butterfly not working...suggestions?

I've had my terry butterfly seat for 5-6 months now and I ride my bike on average 3x per week for about an hour each time.  I could ride longer if I could handle the pain in my pubic bone, I've tried various seat positions and bike shorts and nothing seems to help, so maybe it's time to find a new saddle.  Anybody else have this problem or have suggestions?

thanks,

sore in the saddle

Is the top tube too long?  As in, are you having to lean too far forward such that it bothers the pubic bone?

I gave up on women's saddles ages ago.  I don't like the cut out on them.  I'm using the selle san marco Aspid.  It's a tri specific saddle with a good amount of gel in the nose.  I find after an initial breaking in period it's quite comfortable.  There are some days that are better then others in terms of sensativity in that area, but overall it's worked well.

The other thing I'd suggest before tossing the saddle is make sure you've been fitted properly on your bike.   If your stem is too long you may be to stretched out, and putting extra pressure there.  Saddle height could also be causing problems.

A professional fitting makes a big difference.  It's worth the $$$$

saddles are such a personal thing.  If it's not working for you thne you should try something else.  The Selle san marco aspid damn near killed me and I swear by the Terrys.  So it's all trial and error.  Specialized makes some new women's saddles too.

are you using aero bars for your rides? i know that the butterfly tri has more gel in the front to make aero riding more comfortable. is that the saddle you have now? i agree what all of what has been said. i've had goo luck with serfas and terry (so far on the terry, anyway). my husband loves his brooks.

Also you must consider how much you had ride on it. I went to get a bike fitting 2 weeks ago and the guy asked me how much I'd ride my terry fly gel saddle. I mentioned I bought it last July and since then I had put tons of miles on it. He also use the same saddle and told me that the terry is a great seat but the gel wear's out after 1 year or even 6 months of heavy riding, specially in the mid section. He suggested me to consider it if I started feeling uncomfortable down the road... (He is very reliable; I usually buy all my stuff there so I know he wasn't trying to sell me something)

One that's shaped like a square black box, if I recall.

You're probably made differently than I am, but I have a terry butterfly that never gave me a moment's discomfort AFTER I had my bike fitted by the local guru. Definitely have your bike fit checked out before changing seats.

thanks for the help folks, I will take it into the LBS and see what they say. I also noticed that it appears to be breaking down in the padded area,  it's all collapsed and stuff.  call me cheap but is it too much to ask that a saddle lasts at least a year?  how often do they usually need to be replaced?

That seems kind of weird. Mine isn't the gel kind but it's in perfect shape at 1.5 years and I ride it right through the winter on a trainer. Maybe if the bike fitting doesn't give you any relief you should call up Terry and see if they're willing to do anything to help you.
